Are There Too Many Remakes? | The Kurt Locker

There’s been a lot of remakes in 2023 like Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space with plenty more on the way, and Kurt can’t help but ask: is this a good thing?

It’s May 2023 and three of the top rated games of the year so far are remakes. Let that sink in for a moment – Resident Evil 4 remake, Dead Space remake, and Metroid Prime Remastered all garnered high review scores; three games that are recapturing, remolding, and re-envisioning experiences that are over a decade old. And that's only the beginning, as more remakes are underway like Silent Hill 2, Alone in the Dark, Max Payne 1 and 2 — that's a lot. At face value, it’s totally appropriate to raise an eyebrow: plenty of new games, new experiences have already come out this year, and yet the top three rated games of the year are remakes? That can be misconstrued as a negative thing, but that may not be the case. In fact, look a little closer, and it might be one of the only ways to really uphold a game’s legacy. In this episode of The Kurt Locker, Kurt Indovina examines the current trend of remakes and remasters and breaks down the multi-faceted, even confusing, topic, and gives his perspective on how remakes may actually be a good thing.

The problem with AAA games is they can't fit all the features in by launch.

Because the publishers get fed up & want their money!

A Game like Redfall coulda been alot better if it had another year

if development...

Vampire Survivors is pretty cheap on every aspect of the game

yet ive been playing it for couple months now

a couple rounds before bed.

They are lazy & cheesy imo.

If i want to play old Metroid i go spend $5 and play it.

If you don't have a retro console then that's on you for not throwing in the closet

like i did.

I think it's creatively bankrupt.

I dread to think what the MGS3 remake is going to be.

Kojima's team and Yoji Shinkawa moved on to create other games.

I prefer a catastrophe like Left Alive.

At least they attempted to make something new and the artwork is amazing!

@proceeder: I bet you forced yourself to like DeathStranding.

I forced myself to play it 100 hours until i could takes it no mores.

It's not tat the game is crap that bothers me so much.

It's the fact that his trailers hid what it was or wasn't..

~Why couldn't hideo make a new MetalGear Game

without Konami>??

It;s not like the story in Metal Gear Solid has ever been anything special.

~a Decorated super NavySeal/CIA assassin asset is trained by the best

and......

Hideo could make something to resemble MGS 3 OR MGS5 and print money.

@sippio: The story is not well-though-out, you're right.
It's the characters and their decisions in crises that are thrilling.
Snake is an interesting character made through efforts of many, David Hater, Yoji Shinkawa, the former team at Konami, the people making the trailers, Hideo Kojima, etc.

I don't think so. If a remake can breath new life to an old classic such as making tweaks to obvious aging aspects/mechanics of a game, then to me, it's absolutely worth it. Especially when actual time and effort are put into it. Some remakes feel like actual cash grabs. But every now and then, you get a remake that you can tell legit effort was made to turning classic into a modern day thriller....

Also, hot-take!

Remasters & Remakes shouldn't be allowed to get a game of the year award, objectively.

Imagine just remaking the same game over and over again. And getting game of the year over and over again each year. That's just messed up on so many levels.

They're not running out of ideas. Companies just found a lazy fail-proof route when it comes to making video games.

And that's remastering/remaking old games.

Why? Because fans of the game will buy it regardless of if it good or not. Or even if they already have a functional copy or multi-functional copies. There have been plenty of remakes of games that are just bad. That people on any of these game sites would fight tooth and nail to prove that it's actually a masterpiece that nobody sees. And would rather buy the same remake/remaster game 10x over, then Buy a single new IP. Because the remake has proven quality, something a new IP or title doesn't. On top of that, it's an easy high score since the game they're remaking has gotten a 7 to10/10 in the past (If it has already). And the huge fans of the game are just going to give it that score or higher. With barely any fans giving it anything lower than that. Plus, fans are going to review it more and more positively to validate their priceless childhood games.

And in these companies' defense. Why stop making them in mass if people won't stop buying them in mass?

@illegal_peanut: Agreed.. Esp about them not being out of new ideas.

It's strictly about laziness & guaranteed returns.

BUT remasters don't sell like the originals & they know this.

Mass Effect Trilogy remaster probably sold less then any one of the other Mass Effect games.

~GTA trilogy shouldn't have included the crappy GTA3.

The only reason it's ever been worth a damn is it's the 1st one to have

that type of freedom.

Rockstar woulda been better off remastering Just Vice City and/or San Andreas..

~~As far as new ideas go i bet if we posted a thread about awesome concepts for games we could easily have a blueprint that would be awesome. Th eproblem will always be they are being pressured w/ losing funding from publisher & ownership of IP then goes to pub not dev

if it's cancelled and so these features aren't added...

I bet Phil SPencer was the one ordering Redfall release on that date even though it was anothe rempty Sea Of Thieves launch...
