Although if i can be serious i just want to say those graphics look odd, like a cel-shaded character on a photograph, i mean the graphics are good and i gives it a comic bookish feel, but it just sort of looks awkward.
Ignore that Spartan-1657 guy, the maps are HUGE. I was in Beta. He's been posting that same uninformed crap on the GS forums for CO where we were tearing him apart.
You WoW fanboys make me sick. I play wow and this game looks good. People play wow becuase they are to cheap or dumb to try another game. A tone of good mmo's out there
I never got to play in the closed beta but I did pre-order and play in open beta/pre-launch so I got at least a week and a half+ of good game time. Let's just say it gets very stale. I cannot see this game going far. It has 5 maps.. canada, a desert, millenium city, an underwater level (from what I hear, I never got here) and monster isle. Each map is not even really that big. It makes me understand why the devs included a lifetime subsciption. So many problems with this game, that so many people would quit, but Cryptic has the lifer's by the balls now. Good marketing but I feel really bad for the people who fell for this. I guess all I can say is enjoy the closed beta to star trek (you get access for buying a lifetime subscription to this monotonous game.) DONT GET THIS GAME
I'm having a blast with this game, been playing since late closed beta. VanOrd is spot on with the various issues though. The day one patch was especially controversial, but now they have a test server to actually, you know, test balancing before going live. The combat is a lot of fun, and you can easily turn the comic book outlining off if you dont like it (I do).
\\ warning nagging incoming \\ I'm one of those who bought a lifetime subscription. Unfortunately I live in EU and therefore I am one of the many victims of a very short grace period from open beta to live (launch at September 4th and no more play from September 6th). Game went live Friday and of course here on Sunday I haven't received my pre-ordered copy from Amazon yet. So even after I've already paid more than 3 times the price of the game for a subscription I can only ever use if I in fact buy the game, Cryptic apparently doesn't think it's certain enough that I'm going to buy the game that they are willing to let me play for about 4 days without having entered a game serial code. If this is going to be any indication of the level of customer support people in the EU can expect from Cryptic, I'd advise caution from people in the EU considering buying this game. A shame cause it's so far a really fun game to play.
I can understand the balance issues - superpowered rock, paper scissors means there will always be a certain type you cna't win against. But what I don't understand is why lessen the custom heroes?
This is a great idea! Especially for a MMO game like this, which isn't normalized for a while. I'll keep watching to see how it compares at that point.
Wow, great concept GameSpot, having VanOrd give a quick snapshot of how the game's going so far while still working on the "real" review. I was hoping not to wait too long before hearing something about Champions' actual gameplay. As for the game -- well, I've never been that impressed with Cryptic, so I can't really say I'm surprised about the glitches, patches, and balance issues. The questing looked a little monotonous too. Eh, we'll see.
This game has some good ideas. Great looking characters and skills but is flawed in so many other areas. Professions, gear(enchantments) and PvP are just not very well implemented or interesting.
Im not gonna lie i was in both betas and all the fun you have is in the first 30min "Makeing your SuperHero" Other than that nothing makes this game stand out. PVP is one sided, Casters own mele 80% of the time. It other than that its nothing special. I havent played the game since aug 28th and there was a TON of gfx issues and errors. This is my take on champions i have 6 friends who were gonna play this game and we all have cancled our orders. Sad but true. Imo this is just another mmo that will fade unless some issue are fixed and classes are balanced. WoW is still and will be #1 mmo.
Thanks for the update gamespot. I don't even play mmo's but I love superheroes and the character customization in this game looks so amazing that they should just release it as a 'game' by itself ;)
