Anor Londo silver knights return with a vengeance. Also typical DS tactics: hit enemies in their private parts. Dragon fight? Cut it's tail as close to his genitals as possible. Giant humanoid? Get between his legs and start swinging your blade. Giant dog? Get under him and poke his balls. Giant tree thing/turnip with legs? Get a flaming murakumo and go for his nut sack.
@slappy54: You'd be right if we were talking about just Dark Souls 2. Demons Souls to Dark Souls was a pretty significant transition, introducing lots of new mechanics. Then Bloodborne introduced new visuals and improved animations. It's also much faster paced. Any vet can tell you that it's significantly different.
@slappy54: Honestly, if you look deeper, they change core fundamentals each time.
The depth of covenants change every time. The online rules for PvE and PvP change. Stats and their functions change. Weapon types and movesets change. Magic changes. The rules and methods of survival change. The secrets change. The feel of movement changes. The pace of combat changes.
If you merely watch the game, you might not notice all of these things. Oh look, another big and scary boss, another bonfire, another sword, another dark fantasy world, another death. Put a controller in your hand, and you'll know.
Let's just hope Dark Souls 3 delivers in terms of quantity -- the quality is there. Part of that quality is in its quantity; the number of weapons, covenants, stats, spells, types of PvP all lend themselves to the overall sense of scale.
@slappy54:What's wrong with a game that uses a good formula and end up being so successful?
Dark Souls 1/2, Deamon's Souls, Bloodborne - All games sold a handful amount of copies, enough to justify sequels and spinoffs, why is that a problem if people still keep buying From Software's products?
You sound too bitter, you probably one of those people who didnt finish a single game in the serie.
@kjarlgrimblood: You can release spinoffs as long as people gonna buy them. People buy these stuff for a reason, think about it. And as long as it sells, they will keep making more of it. That being said, it will be the last souls game so they mentioned - and for better or worst, i'm frankly very sad by this fact.
@kjarlgrimblood: I've never met a person who finished a Souls game who doesn't clamor for the next. Bloodborne is a Souls game as Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest is a Final Fantasy game. It's faster, shorter, easier, more linear, and less complex. That being said, I enjoyed Mystic Quest, and I enjoyed Bloodborne. But give me Dark Souls.
@Erebus: Funny you say easier, I found it harder than any of the DS games. Play style shift perhaps, but I feel the lack of shield tanking and more aggressive enemies leaves a narrower margin for error. As for length and complexity, not really sure where you're coming from there. It's about as long as Dark Souls and Demon Souls, a little shorter than DS:II. Linearity wise it's about on par with Demon Souls and Dark Souls. Complexity wise? Eh, there's no magic system (which in DS is pretty basic anyways), a much more complex weapon and combo system, but fewer over all weapons.
@Erebus: Bloodborne, while it looked the best was the worst of the lot for me. I still can not even finish it I was so bored. I enjoyed the magic in Dark Souls. Bloodborne's constant melee attacks just didn't do it for me.I'm hoping DarkSouls 3 is better. I still play Dark Souls because its just that great of a game.
I'm really, really happy to see the evasive and aggressive gameplay style of Bloodborne integrated with Dark Souls. Make no mistake, I love the traditional gameplay of DS, but the game's system just made shield turtling basically the go to tactic for success and it's become kinda boring. Sure you could play an evasive style, but it's typically less effective and the system just didn't support it very well. Now with the combination of the traditional DS Tank n' Spank with BB Dash n' Slash into the same game I think it will add some much needed variety to how people can approach the game, and opens up a whole new avenue for build variety. Boxer, fencer, rogue, and archer play styles will benefit greatly from this I think. Magic users will likely appreciate the added mobility as well.
@pa_amb_tomaquet: That's not possible when you can be invaded at any time, and it shows what you're doing in other people's games. Maybe they could do it for offline. But I don't mind it.
I tried to get into Bloodbourne, but hated the cat and mouse gameplay. I love the design of BB and DS, but the mechanics don't appeal to me.. am I missing something other than resolve? Or are people liking the games because of the insane difficulty and nostalgia?
@consolehaven: The Souls games are deeply strategic, everything from the gameplay, to the mechanics to the story, nothing is hand fed to you, you have to piece it together for yourself. It's kind of like playing a David Lynch movie, and that's the appeal fans have with the game. It just may not be for you.
@consolehaven: Nope, it's just not the type of game for you. It's like people who prefer Gran Turismo or Forza to Need For Speed or Burnout, it's just a matter of taste. Bloodborne and the Souls games are loved for their insane difficulty, which requires a LOT of patience and adaptability. Players also seem to enjoy that the storylines in the games aren't actually spelled out plainly, and that you have to both explore and think about what's going on because the game won't just tell you.
Personally I disliked Demon's Souls because of it's focus on turtling, but kinda liked Bloodborne's more aggressive style. I ended up giving up because the Souls/BB fanbase can be incredibly toxic, but I'm going to give it another shot soon because I shouldn't really blame a game because some of it's fanbase rotted out.
@Redskyze: I think that's kind of a dumb reason to turn away from a game, especially one like this. I can understand to some extent a heavily online focused game (LoL, Dota, CoD, CS, R6S, etc.) but this is a single player game predominately, the fanbase should be the last of your concern.
@hoyholyhoy: Indeed it is a dumb reason, but it happened and I can't rewind time to slap myself. I actually just ordered it from Best Buy earlier today so I can give it another go because I did enjoy the quicker fighting and the architecture and world design was damned good too.
@Redskyze: FINISH IT! You will be glad you did afterward! On the PS3 & PS4, I have platinumed Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls II and Bloodborne. It's so rewarding once you've done it... and I'm 44 years old! If my slow old ass can do it, you can, too!! And for those who're saying Bloodborne is easier than the Souls series haven't delved into the Chalice Dungeons fighting crazy ass bosses at half your health.
