Thanks gamespot, you really have a lot of talent when you make articles/video like this, you should use it instead of throwing away all the talent with crap like potato mode.

Also, with articles like this you promote the newer generation of gamers to go back in time a bit and explode a different era of video gaming. Try to get them back to 1998 - 2003 ;)

What game would you guys consider has held up to the test of time the best? For me, it would be both N64 Zelda games.

@AlabamaFan92: That's a very interesting question. "Planetfall" really holds up great, as do "Super Mario World" and "Ms. Pac-Man."

What do you mean "holds up". That is such a stupid expression. Holds up to what? Your pathetic expectations?

Either play the game or don't play it. It's a bunch of these newage kid hipsters who go like "ah...ah...aaaahhh" as their tiny brains explode with something so irrelevant but they find profound and are unable to process.

@fanirama: You really dont understand the concept of something "holding up?" Here the author means it "stands the test of time." Maybe you're too young to have experienced something (music, film, writing, game, etc...) both while it was new, then again years later. Many things don't "hold up." It has nothing to do with expectations necessarily, it's just that styles and tastes (and with games technology) change over time. This often results in something which is considered good when new being a less satisfying experience years later. This author is explaining that Dark Souls is still fun and interesting 7 years later. Such enduring quality is generally proof of a creative work's artistic merit. But you seem less interested in that than making a pedantic argument about something pointless.

@darkallah: Well, no. I clearly understand what "holding up" means. It is very clear in my second statement.

I'm lamenting moreso the fact that the author takes a game released 7 years ago and had a good 3-4 year run and after 3 years, commenting on how "it still holds up", an expression that is used for a lengthy passage of time. Not a measly 3-4 years in this gaming context.

Saying a game from 2002 like GTA: Vice City or from 1990s like Diablo 2 holds up really well today makes more sense.

His comment is juvenile and sounds anachronistic.

@darkallah: There are also several solid examples of technical elements like lack of autosaves, maps, bad menus, inventory, etc that can make certain older titles in a genre seem less enjoyable over time.

Like Metroid vs Super Metroid, for an easy example.

Red Dead Revolver vs Redemption.

etc....

Still my favorite game of all time. To anyone who is playing for the first time, I highly recommend not using faqs or guides. The game is meant to be discovered, and the greatest accomplishment is stumbling upon a shortcut back to a bonfire, or finally figuring out a way past a boss.

Rencently started playing this series for the first time with Demon Souls Remaster, I absolutely love it. So pumped, that I have many games to look forward to after I beat this one. Awesome video by the way.

I dont get the love for this game. Compared to Demon's Souls, this game was very badly designed, and looked very ugly too. Most unpleasant and depressing game I've played on last gen.

@henrythefifth: It's a shame you didn't get to enjoy this superb masterpiece like the rest of us. Your loss.

@henrythefifth: Are you talking level design? Cause Dark Souls was connected, while Demon Souls you warped from a hub.

@Tyrant156: Yeah I have played both(Demon Souls being a game I bought a ps3 for) and loved the level design of Dark Souls. Having a hub world makes everything easier, but certainly not better. Mabye @Tyrant156 found the world design of Dark Souls overwhelming and confusing. For a first time player I can see how the overall design could lead to some headaches.

@AlabamaFan92 : Huh? No I'm arguing in favor of a connected world over a hub. I think dark souls 2 found a balance between the two systems.

One thing I love is playing as a Sunbro because you get to do the boss fights a lot and Solaire is one of my favorite game characters ever.

@dmblum1799: I am literally wearing the t-shirt right now, Summer beer in hand. Big SunBro symbol, THE SunBro #1 doing the SunBro emote in the center. ...and it's 92degF in the sun out here.

PRAISE.

I really need to revisit this. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I never played beyond Ornstein and Smough. Would feel good to right that wrong!

@theteaface: You can do it. This is THE moment/test of the game. Farm Painted World Phalanx for a couple hours. Level up carry weight so load < 50%, and more stamina. Hell, go way back and make Queelag's Furysword if you have to.

Roll a LOT. Use the column stubs to heal. Ornstein is behind you so dodge R/L after heal. Rush and retreat Smough. Buy tshirt on Redbubble when you win. Praise The Sun.

@theteaface: go for it bro! Those guys destroyed me years ago, they've paid for it many times over since though haha. Patience is key here, that and pyromancy is a big help. Try going for the smaller of the two first, he's fast and will always create a gap between him and fatty which you can exploit. Don't be afraid to go hyper aggressive on him aswell as he is relatively easy to stun lock. For fatty (after he gets a boost mid fight), use the pillars in the arena as cover and don't get greedy, take a swing or two then back and recover stamina. Good luck.

Utterly timeless. The slow, steady, always-on-guard, never-button-mash gameplay literally never gets old. In over 7 years (played DeS after DaS1), I've never NOT had a current Souls character in the works. Heck, I'd argue that I have "currently-active" characters in all 4 main games right now, and could arguably do another BB run while I'm at it.
