The PlayStation Network is currently facing some issues.
Sony reports on Twitter that it's aware of problems involving account creation, likely the result of lots and lots of people switching on new consoles for the first time on Christmas.
We're aware that new PSN account validation and Password reset emails are delayed. Thanks for your patience as we resolve this issue.

This is a particularly painful problem, as a PSN account is required to access the PlayStation Store, subscribe to PlayStation Plus, and play games online.
