Every PlayStation Launch Game, From PS1 To PS5

The PS5 is upon us, so let’s take a trip down memory lane by looking back on all the PlayStation launch titles and seeing how they stack up to the latest console.

Every console has to launch with games, right? Sometimes those games are good and sometimes they’re bad, but they’re always remembered as the games that launched alongside said system. With the PlayStation 5 quite literally around the corner we thought now would be a good time to look back at all the PlayStation launches starting with the first PlayStation in 1994 (1995 in America).

The first PlayStation began with titles like the original Rayman, a Crystal Dynamics game known as Total Eclipse Turbo, and Ridge Racer (you’ll be seeing plenty of that franchise in this video). The PlayStation 2 had some Rockstar games, a bunch of ESPN titles, and a FromSoftware game about a ring--if you can believe it. The PlayStation 3, meanwhile, had Call of Duty, Madden, NBA, and NFL--all those sports games you love. Finally, the PlayStation 4 had Assassin’s Creed, and Knack, but unfortunately no Ridge Racer. Of course, there's a bunch of games alongside those, so tune in to see all those games too.

The PlayStation 5 will launch on November 12 in some regions and November 19 in others, with titles like Demon Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure available at launch.

A list that doesn't actually name the things that are supposed to be in the list.

Is this the new generation thing? If so, I think I'll bow out of the next 20 years.

This time around it'll be more worthwhile to get a XB console first, merely because of all the current and upcoming new titles being on XB Gamepass. None of the PS exclusives r currently of interest in a personal capacity.

@ajm: I will eventually get a series X, but honestly bruh, there is absolutely no next gen exclusives on that console yet. Why get it first? I got my pre-order for the PS5 disc-based for that very reason

@tsunami2311: I was assuming hoping it would actually list all of them.

I think Xbox a series X is going to be my favorite launch/launch window lineup ever, and probably PS5 will be similarly awesome.

SNES was amazing though too. Xbox 360 was pretty good.

@wolfpup7: I agree, xb is definitely the console of preference first, mainly due to all new titles coming up on Gamepass. PS5 is something for later.

They forgot SSX for ps2. Was definitely a launch game and I remember it clearly.

But man, seems as the generations came, the games diminished for launch titles. Now you get like 5 games, most remakes....

I had a few PS2 launch titles like Smugglers Run, Armored Core 2, Tekken Tag Tournament, Timesplitters. PS1, I had Rayman which was cool for it's time. PS3, only launch title I played was Resistance Fall of Man which was fun with my brother.

Usually the launch titles are destroyed by time in some many aspects, but I still play and love REsistance fall of Man.

@santinegrete: that first game was really good. Their one was made worse by having no regenerating health.

@wolfpup7: you mean the 2nd one? I disliked that one, even if it had good moments (great boss fights).

You forgot Resogun, Flow, Flower, and Journey on the PS4. You forgot Demon's Souls on the PS5. That has been confirmed.

PS5 beats out PS1, PS3, and PS4 at launch so far. Spider Man. Demon's Souls, Bug Snacks, Astro's Playroom, The Pathless, and Sack Boy's Big Adventure all seem like cool games worth playing. The rest of the titles are standard fair for launch lineups. Watch Dog Legions and Assassins Creed will be good in their own right. If you add in launch window titles like Kena and Guilty Gear, the launch lineup gets sweeter. The games on launch day look average to good at best. Launch window is pretty great. Add the PS4 BC in there with boost mode on the first party titles and it is arguably the best launch since PS2.

Armored Core 2, Tekken Tag, Dynasty Warriors 2, and Timesplitters were great for their time. Ready to Rumble was not bad either. PS1 BC was awesome.

@chubby170: I haven’t looked at ps5’s launch window lineup, but Xbox Series X is the best I’ve ever seen, with literally at least 12 must buy games for me, and some more I may want but need to know more. I’d assume ps5’s will be similarly great, and include stuff I’d want like spider man and I guess a new horizon too.

Ps2’s launch was weak from what I remember. Xbox 360’s was pretty good, so was snes.

@chubby170: it beats the other launches outside of PS2 by a mile. PS4s best game was old school arcade style game called resogun. The only game that stood out on PS3 was Fall of man for five months. The best game on PS1 at launch was Rayman, and that was originally on the Jaguar. The only other game that was considered good was Toshinden. This quickly faded out after Tekken and Tekken 2 were released. Having Insomniac, Bluepoint and Sackboy at launch is the best that Sony has ever done. Having Kena, Ratchet, and Guilty Gear in launch window is also the Sony has ever done for early titles. PS3 only had Motorstorm and maybe Virtua Fighter 5. PS2 had Onimusha and Windback in launch Window. PS4 had Infamous Second Son. PS1 had Mortal Kombat 3, Street Fighter Alpha, and Twisted Metal in launch window. The PS1 had the best launch window out of the four consoles so far and most of the early titles were arcade ports. Two and a half games from Insomniac, One game from Bluepoint, another from Sumo Digital plus the indie games is a lot better what has happened previously.

@laurenriley3332: I guess we can agree to disagree. From what I see, PS4 and PS5 are the worst launches for games. Of course this is all opinionated.

PS2 was the clear winner. SSX was enough to own that system alone.

@chubby170: I guess we are going to have to disagree. PS3 was almost garbage at launch as well window with the only saving graces being Resistance, Ridge Racer 7, Motorstorm, and Virtua Fighter 5. Multiplats ran better on 360 and had all the features such as online play. Tony Hawk Project 8 lacked online functionality on PS3. PS1 was more impactful but most launch games were eclipsed within a year after release. PS5 has more than four games worth playing at launch, so it beats out PS1, PS3 and PS4.

Damn I miss Ridge Racer, I hope they bring RR6 to XB backward compatibility or remaster it at the very least.

@nintendians: It didn’t matter. That generation opened up a whole new world to us with the mainstream of 3D console gaming. It was a huge step. I can’t tell you how much Ridge Racer, Battle Arena Toshinden, and ESPN Extreme Games I played.

@rawkstar007: I liked saturn’s launch window games better, though obviously both had much better stuff later, but there’s some launch window Saturn stuff I’d still play and the psx stuff was mostly bad even at the time.

@rawkstar007: in a way it was, play little of it and it's still a good gaming system, just hated the long loading times.

@nintendians: Life was a little slower in the 90s. It’s easy to look back now and knock the long load times but we didn’t really notice it at the time. There was nothing quite like it. I mean, yeah, there was the 3DO that released the previous year but that thing was $700 compared to the PS1 at $300. It was a no contest.

@rawkstar007: probably not for you, but for me, it a bit longer than the nintendo 64, if you put them side by side.

@rawkstar007: well, technically 3DO was way cheaper by the time Saturn launched.

@soulmuncher666: My guess is the author wasn't even alive or extremely young when PS2 launched.
