Final Fantasy 7 Remake: 34 Cool Easter Eggs And Callbacks

Think your easter egg eagle eyes can beat ours? Good luck, because ours were forged in the fires of Fort Condor. See if you caught all of these references and callbacks to the original FF7 in the remake!

Final Fantasy 7 Remake brings back Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and the city of Midgar some 23 years after the release of the original game. The FF7 remake is an expanded retelling of the first part of the original's story, adding new events, new dialogue, and new character development--but much of what appeared in the 1997 FF7 has been brought back, either in an updated form, or as a callback to the PSX classic.

Where FF7 Remake isn't exactly retelling the original game's tale, it's littered with Final Fantasy 7 jokes, references, callbacks, and Easter eggs. We've compiled a huge list of those callbacks, ranging from visual cues and graphically updated recreations, to tiny in-jokes meant to impress die-hard fans. Check them all out in the video above.

We've scoured just about every inch of Final Fantasy 7 Remake to discover every secret and collectible hidden in Midgar. Head over to our rundown of Final Fantasy 7 Remake guides and walkthroughs for every strategy, secret, and tip you need to get everything out of the game. Once you're done, read up on what we know about Final Fantasy Remake: Part 2.

An obvious missed, the benches where you can restore MP/HP for free, have the original save symbol on them. A kick back to the fact you could use an item at save points to fully restore mp/hp of your whole party.

There are zero changes to the story. It ends exactly the same, the crew setting off in search of Sephiroth. Where are people getting this "drastic changes" from?

@Grampy_Bone: the remake hits all the main beats of the story, so no drastic changes but to say the story is exactly the same is to miss the point of what they are doing with the remake, Sephiroth has managed to go back in time somehow and is actively trying to change things after he lost, and the arbiters of fate are trying to fix what he’s messing with, now that the group were tricked into killing fate Sephiroth has more control in the next part going forward. I think the developers are just trying to mess with us and make us think things like Aerith could live just to give the original player uncertainty to make it hit harder when the time comes, they have already said the next parts will still hit the main story beats as well so.

When you fall in the sewers you can choose to either approach Tifa or Aerith first, and it affects your affection with either character. This also happens in the exact same way in the original game.

true story, the USA FF7 I played in 1997, Aerith was spelled Aeris. Later on it was weird seeing a different spelling. I still spell her Aeris, and her music and cut scenes are still tear jerkers. It was wtf moment (still the most memorable moment in gaming history for me and many that played it) back in the days, good thing we didn't have much internet to spoiled it.

Anyways since I haven't played this game since 1997 or 8 it was still fresh. I just remembered the major events not the little details. I did beat the reamke and it is great. Just sad it was just Midgar and you can't play red 13. That really bugged me. What is next we can't play yuffie.

@xophaser: they explained this. it's because red 13 was introduced so late in the remake.

Spoilers.

When Cloud sees Aerith in her garden in the middle of the night before they go to rescue her, she does her praying pose with her eyes closed and head tilted down (exactly like when Sephiroth killed her in the original except shes not kneeling in the remake) and she says "everyone dies eventually"
