Ghost Recon Breakpoint Impressions - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

We played 20 minutes of the newly revealed Ghost Recon Breakpoint, an open-world sequel with a lot of promise and a few red flags.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint is the follow-up to 2017's Wildlands, and it offers more tactical cooperative shooting--this time in the fictional region of Auroa. But for all of its promise, Breakpoint does raise some red flags.

I don't get this review. I like Mike Mahardy and have a lot of respect for the what he has to say - but I really don't care about the political implications raised in a video game. Far Cry 5 got a load of abuse because of it's villains and protagonists. Wildlands, which I've just started playing, seems to have upset some people because it shows the team up against a drug cartel in Bolivia, trying to take the fight to them to stop (or at least slow) their drug production and transportation. But because it mentions a real country it gets slated? I mean, Bolivia does have a huge problem with the cartels as do many of the countries in that region.

It's not like that worrying part of the CoD game a few years back where you wander through an airport mowing down countless citizens. I don't know if you can kill the citizens in Wildlands, I've not tried it, but the game is about killing the members of the cartel. Just because the problem the game is aimed at exists to a much greater extent in that region than most others Mike and this other guy are talking at length on the psychological issues involved and giving the game an early black mark; I mean, does it matter? If the game was about countering hackers and online fraudsters would people be upset if the majority of the game was based in Nigeria, Russia or China? If the basis of the game was the fight against the IRA, I'd fully expect most of that game to be sited in Northern Ireland.

So now Breakpoint is based is a fictional country / island - which is fine - that really doesn't matter. I just don't understand why people should be concerned about where a game is set if the issues and problems around which that game is based are genuine problems in that particular country. As long as the game doesn't suggest that the vast majority of people in Bolivia are actively involved in drug use and production or that everyone in Nigeria is involved in online scamming...

@mpl911: My answer is that people shouldn't be concerned about where the game is set and all of the political strings attached to that. Most gamers couldn't care less.

However, Gamespot is no longer a video game website - it is a website filled with political ideologues who would rather be working for Buzzfeed but settled for vidya game 'journalism.'

It's really frustrating because I have come to this site for years and years. Now, I only come here for the meme of it all.

What engine is this on?

Also, I don't expect a political anything from Ubisoft.

I'll leave that to the Spec Ops and MGSs of the world.

Hmm....just like every other Ubisoft game; it's almost 2020 and they haven't figured out how Open/Closed Beta periods are supposed to work and how every other game designer in the world uses them. Most titles will have a closed/open beta about 6 months (or earlier) from the initial release. That way, the player base can find issues with the game, broken mechanics, texture flaws, etc...that way, developers can address these issues and fix them before the final release. However, with Ubi; they release the open beta like 3 weeks before release; so no matter what's found, there's no way they can fix the tons of crap that players inevitably find. So...if the issues are SOMEHOW addressed before launch (ha! not likely); the game ships with a huge patch or has to have a big patch within the first few days or week after launch.

And why the hell do I have to have full-time, Internet connectivity to play the game? This isn't 1998, where hacker nerds are on street corners or hosting FTP sites with hacked/cracked versions of games to install on peoples' PCs. There's literally no reason to keep the damned game connected to the Internet at all times. Certainly, a big draw was being able to play solo, but with support. Now...we have no AI teammates. Anyone familiar with UPlay can tell you how bad it is to play with stranger-trolls on UPlay. Man...guys, stop letting us down by giving us 10-11 new ideas/features and making the infrastructure and/or internal workings of the game worse and worse. UPlay is the heart of the problem and just needs to go.

I've tumbled down enough mountainsides in Steep to recognize the inspiration for the Breakpoint equivalent. ;)

No offline play, no tactical ai squad, overuse of future tech. What a shame.

It's good the character from the punisher will be in breakpoint aka Jon berthnal.

However I find it funny ubisoft has the audacity to comment on what the community wants especially with the amount of employees they employ.

Assassin's creed 2, is a great game

Assassin's creed origins is a great game because it focuses on real authentic Egypt (something ubisoft rarely does but eventually screws it up)

And assassin's creed odyssey.

Oddly I wouldn't play them all in one go unless you wish to go crazy as they are huge enough to develop PTSD.

So what does this have to do with ghost recon breakpoint (well ubisoft showed a teaser of all the ghost recon games ever made, and some better then others some more tactical and choke point then ever.)

But my major greif with breakpoint is it's inability to explain what being wounded is all about? ESPECIALLY with Tom Clancy's name smothered onto it.

I feel what battle royale did the ghost recons is what death stranding will do to breakpoint? Why.. well I assume death stranding will embark on mental illness and progressive injury that carries on over the due course of the game.

However breakpoint theme is being pushed to the limit, get wounded react accordingly until your patched up and a super soldier, friends go done slap on some adrenaline and they to a super soldiers, running out of a few bandages that's okay die at a check point.

What happens if your shot in the head, or shot in the chest, or you step on a mine and your legs gone (can't you do what GTA 5 did, control 3 characters and each have their skills but develope serious issues and argue and based on where you rest one might be dependent on alcohol, another you may have to assign back to the evac chopper and they later get fitted with cyborg arms and lims,(well your telling a futuristic story about ai).

Fk me ubisoft what game are you making with all those employees.

Harry up death stranding tired of these noobs.

I'd like to see the reviews on this one. It was hard to stay engaged in Wildlands.

When I keep hearing "you and your friends" I get less excited about a game. Unlike others, I don't have friends who game like I do. It happens. How do you make a game better for the people who didn't like it without alienating the people who did?

@gunnyninja: I tend to be wary whenever a game is focused upon even small co-op teams--especially when it bears an Ubisoft logo. My pool of gamer buddies is shrinking due to life situations/personal reasons/etc. That's okay--it happens.

The amount of time that I spend playing solo has been increasing at a steady rate, so Ubi's standard hype about multi-player features does not instill much confidence regarding the solo experience. I doubt that the AI in Breakpoint will be far removed from the comical NPCs in Wildlands, so I wouldn't expect much in the way of accommodation for lone wolves this time around. But who knows?

@yeknomdab: There is no AI in Breakpoint. That was my point. I play the Division games solo, but they didn't have a squad option. I wish they did.
