This was really fun to watch. We need some classic horror games every now and then. You should definitely play some of the newer Silent Hills in the future as well.

How can you question the controls :O That's what we were all using back in the 90s, it's the same as Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, and Parasite Eve. Silent Hill is a great game, I do prefer Silent Hill 3 in the series, it seemed to have more depth put into it's storyline, just a shame they made an awful movie out of the games success.

@Kos1c I'm sure they're fine of their own right, just difficult for me to pick up and play when I've never used a control system like it.

@tempertress Ah man, with you never using that style of control, does that mean you never got to experience the greats of Resident Evil 2 and 3? Silent Hill 2 and 3 (PS2), or Dino Crisis 1 and 2? :O
If not, you're missing out! :P
If you ever get around to those titles. I think you can remap the D-pad onto the analog if bought from the PSN store ( http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/game/2settings.html )
If that makes the game any easier. :)

It's a shame from the video above, you guys never got into the Nightmare world of Silent Hill, that place shit me up when I first played the game, I must've been like 11 at the time.

@Kos1c I think it's only the PSP/PSVita which can remap the D-pad buttons to analog sticks, which is a shame.

@Kos1c I thought the movie was fine! If only they hadn't kept moving back to the "real world" all the time it would have been great.

Of course I watched it at the cinema and not on my cellphone. That makes a bit of a difference.

@Saketume

I'm unsure what the cell phone remark is about. I watched the DVD release since I knew it would be as bad as the first movie, to actually waste money seeing it in the cinema. The movie tried to follow the game more this time around. But the thing that bugged me was that they would explain some of the storyline, then skip a ton of it, and make up some very quick explanation of it. I can't recall what it was, but it was that high school cult kid told Heather something or gave her something, and she knew what to do without the need to explain it. I won't re watch the movie to remember exactly what it was ( I turned the DVD off before the end due to it being crap, was either go to bed now or watch the last 15 mins then bed).The game s worth the time, the movie is a skip for Silent Hill fans.

@Kos1c

Sorry for the late reply. Yes I agree a movie doesn't automatically become bad because it's watched on TV.

A big screen and proper sound always helps though. How much it helps depends on the type of movie.

Horror movies without good sound loses a lot in my opinion.A tiny screen isn't helping the horror either.

I have a proper surround sound setup for that with full size speakers in my living room so it's usually ok to watch on TV (awaiting money for a projector).

Most people don't have surround sound though and those who do usually have cheap 5.1 crap surround. (tiny speakers with low quality and a cheap undersized subwoofer with too much of the sound spectrum moved to it).

I maintain my view that movies always give a much better impression at the cinema than on TV.

It was perhaps most obvious when my dad went to the movies for the first time in 30 years and thought the movie was BRILLIANT. On TV he never likes any movie. It's my opinion that he doesn't focus on the movie when at home.

@Saketume
I know where your coming from. Some movies work with a larger screen, but most movies should be great both on and off the cinema experience. So it's a bit of a hard one to judge.
A movie should be as great on both a standard size Tv (My bedroom one is a 47", 3D tv, so it's above a standard 32"), and cinema screen.
In this case, Silent Hill the movie was still a terrible experience in plot, as well as execution, I probably would've felt the same seeing it in the cinema. Last movie I went to see in the Cinema was Toy Story 3, that was a huge let down, but Disney Pixar "Up" was a great movie to watch and that was done on a standard 23" monitor.

So what I'm pointing at is, it isn't how you watch a movie, it's how entertaining a movie is. Sure the experience helps you enjoy a movie a lot more, but when you're planning on to get a DVD copy. You will never be able to replicate a cinema experience at home without the 40 foot screen and hall style surround sound.

@Kos1c Well I exaggerated when I said cellphone. I've just found that peoples perception (including my own) depend on how and when they watched a movie.

Some movies are really great in the cinema and kind of meh when watched on TV.

Unless you've seen it on the big screen with proper sound it's impossible to know what you're missing.

One such movie is "The Haunting". It was a mediocre or even bad film for sure but it worked OK at the cinema. The reason is that it focused a lot on sweeping shots of this big mansion. When seen on the TV that is completely lost and the film appears to be way worse than it is.

Another example is "Jurassic Park". First is the incredibly impressive helicopter fly in when the movie begins. Lost even on a decently big TV.

Next is the first dinosaur walking in on the screen setting its enormous foot down.

That just looks ridiculous on TV.

These are obvious examples but there's more to this.

At home people tend not to get as immersed in a movie. They watch movies in daylight with other people around them doing other things. They pause to take phone calls or go to the toilet. They go fetch snacks from the kitchen without pausing the movie etc etc.

All these things may seem like they don't ruin the movie but if I had statistics I'm sure I could prove that people exiting a cinema are generally more positive about a movie than someone who just watched it on DVD.

@moodyfoo I want some of the same crap? You actually being serious? You really think, the only people who would watch the Silent Hill movies (movies that were placed in cinema) are only the ones who've played the videogame , who know the exact storyline for it? So they can understand it fully?

Don't you think it's a bit selfish of the directors to skip important parts of the storyline from the game, so people who've never gotten to experience the game will completely miss out? Before you try to act all high and mighty, you should take a minute and think why are other people insulted by this movie, why has this movie been rated soo poorly. Instead of being an asshole.
I watched the first movie, and thought it was a terrible concept of Silent Hill, and saw 90% of the second one and felt it was poorly executed. You may of liked them, but more than half of the ratings out there don't.

"

It's in too much of a rush, and tries to cram in so much plot that unless you're familiar with the game it's closely adapted from, chances are it will leave you baffled."
This review sums up my opinion of the movie. I'm familiar with the game, so I can follow it fully, but it's rather annoying to know what happens in the game, and how close the movie could of been (it's like 80% of the game with a few major missing parts). I would've enjoyed the movie so much more if it was an exact copy from the game.

Oh, btw, just curious, are you one of the Resident Evil movie fans as well?

@Kos1c and who are you to speak for ALL the fans of silent hill? i watched both movies and imo i think they're the best videogame-movie adaptation. also it's BASED on the videogame so that means it's not gonna re-tell you the story you already know. i see the movies as an homage to the series because that's what they are, too bad people like you who just want more of the same crap can't grasp that. oh and i did play all of the silent hill exept for downpour.

Without the use of analogs it's not a bad system for a D pad controller. But growing up in the D pad world, it's easy enough to adapt to different control schemes, unless they are just 100% terrible.

I feel Jess took it a bit too lightly. This is a serious game not something to rush around in heh.

Those stupid mumblers ruin it though. The grey kids don't look so comical. You should have picked the NTSC version.

And SH1 is definitely the best. SH3 pfft ;)

It looks like the scariest thing about that game is how clunky the controls and camera angles are. Still, it was a good episode.

@starduke Noooooooo. I'm sorry for you if the video gave you that impression. The scary bit is the mood and the sounds. That gets lost in this giggly playthrough. There is some truth about the camera angles and controls but don't dismiss it because of that.

It's really a very immersive game and you're supposed to be careful around every monster and not attract several of them at a time. Conserve ammo and all that. One of the best games ever made imo. You're missing out.

You should give it a chance really. It's one of the best games ever.

(Now why is "immersive" marked red by the spellchecker I wonder. Is it not a proper word? Google disagrees)

@Saketume @starduke I completely agree with Saketume, this game shouldn't be brushed off because the camera angle and controls look a little bit difficult to use. A good 20 minutes into the game and you'll have them mastered.

This is the type of game to be played, not the type to watch. It's a great game, one of the best classics out there, but it was a poor choice for this type of show.

Silent Hill doesn't really open it's self up as quickly with a horror aspect, such as say F.E.A.R (f*ck every and run). It's the same as the original Resident Evils (1, 2, 3 and spin offs). You won't get much out of the game within the space of an hour, let alone giving the game to someone who've never played it before (Jess), so we didn't get to see much of what the game offers in the live stream.

To the comment on Resident Evil 4, the controls (well red dot sight), I remember the shooting to be awkward, and the turning to be a bit heavy, but it was more of 'learn to adapt' than anything else. Most games are like that, or they just use the same style as every other game out there so people don't have the need to adapt. But truthfully I would personally say, if you get a chance to play any of the Silent Hill originals (1, 2, 3) you shouldn't turn down the chance. Or grab a copy of the Hd remakes, and turn it onto 3D movement in the options (hold up to move up, down to move down, no more turning on the spot to run away).

@Saketume Sorry, but from the looks of it, I'd get too frustrated with the controls and camera angles to be able to enjoy it. I had a similar issue with RE, and RE 4, both of which I now consider a waste of my money because I couldn't enjoy them because of the controls and camera in the former, and just the controls in the latter.
