After watching a few of these House of Horror shows, this has got to be my favourite one. You rock, Jess! I love your comments and especially "What makes the gun go gun?" You're a natural comedian. :-)

@nuno999 you know what i liked best about SH4? the fact that the target audience was probably young to middle age guys who live in an apartment--so while Henry Townsend isn't fleshed out at all, the players can fill it in all by themselves with what they already know and feel as human--the kind of solitude that comes with living on your own, maybe hidden, unshared feelings towards those that live close to you (my social cognitive neurosci textbook said people will fall in love the most readily with those that live closer to them~~art reflects life). i think akira yamaoka talked about blurring the line between the game and reality to keep the horror lingering, and the developers pulled this off excellently by recreating the target audience's own home in a generic apartment room--and then, they progressively corrupted this home, which originally gave health and tranquility, into something horrible--a grave, a portal to the world of the unliving, a home of fear.

(don't mistake me, though--with "middle age guys" i'm not saying a female couldn't play and understand SH4, just as i wouldn't say a guy couldn't play and understand SH3).

@toane @nuno999 i've only played SH3 and 4. i thought SH4 was totally part of the same series, but i guess if you had grown attached to the actual roaming around silent hill and all the sort of continuous storyline with 1/3, then i can see how you would be disappointed in sh4.

as a horror game on its own, though, i thought it was good. people didn't like MGS2 because they thought that you needed to play as Snake to be a true MGS game, but Kojima sort of explained that if you see the legend from the outside, then the legend seems so much more legendary. He gave the example of Sherlock Holmes books being written from the position of Watson. If it were Holmes doing all the first-person explaining, it would make sense and all, but there would be no mystery about Sherlock's thinking method; by seeing the legend from the outside, from Watson's view, Sherlock's enigma is preserved.

Similarly, seeing the enigma of Silent Hill and how it corrupts and threatens the world around it *from the outside* lends Silent Hill more mystery--what you can't see and know clearly becomes more frightening than that which you could always see.

One of my all time favorite PS1 games, I loved that game so much! Scared the crap out of me but I beat it multiple times and got the secret weapons: Katana, Mining Drill, Chainsaw and Ray Gun!

Yay, I've been waiting for you guys to do a Silent Hill game. :D Would be awesome to see the other SH games too (you don't have to use the horrible tank controls in the others), I recommend SH3 for maximum scariness. Siren: Blood Curse might also be a good one to try.

@Zorine With so many different camera angles, tank controls are an absolute necessity.

@SpookyJack @Zorine i actually really like the shifting camera angles. it gives the developers a chance to really change the focus of the scene. (it also gives them a chance to disorientate you...which can be frustrating) but if done right, it can be a good mechanic.

like the one room in SH3 hospital when you step in the room and the angle shows a bucket full of blood with Heather in the background...then, when you step in, there's upside-down dood on the ceiling! (very unlike a people)

and in the end of SH3, when the voodoo-inspired music plays for the last time (after that tarot card puzzle) with the bleeding walls in all their goodness, the camera angle shifts a lot. it's really disorientating, but since there are no enemies in that area, i thought it was appropriate, giving a real sense of urgency and tension and fright right before the climactic dialogue.

@nuno999 @toane I don't find it contradictory. Silent Hill 4 was a huge step away from the classic Silent Hill motif I had grown to love, so I didn't enjoy it as a Silent Hill. I still appreciated the horror elements though.
If I recall correctly the fourth game was the first in the series created by an entirely different team? I may be wrong here. The previous games had a distinct theme, and the many bold ideas introduced didn't bond well with Silent Hill imo, hence my disappointment.
Like hoping for an awesome sequel to your favourite movie, only to find
that the only common thing is the genre, and some minor references. It can be a great movie, but you may dislike it because of different expectations.

When I consider I find the controls of the PS1 era easy and intuitive, I feel really, really old :/
Now let me tell you one of my stories...
Playing on my PS1 with the d-pad felt natural, the only time I raged a bit was replaying it on a PS emulator years later with a bad gamepad.
You always move where you are supposed to with the corresponding buttons, unlike some newer 3rd person games, where camera angles change what's forward and backwards on the controls, and you have to adapt on the fly. The only major drawback is that it's far less immediate, but nothing too hard here...
This game had incredible conveniences for its time too!
- Non fixed camera that follows the character ( and doesn't clip like some modern fails) You can almost always reset your field of view with L2, (or gain focus by holding it), and in cases where you can't, it likely adds to the atmosphere and doesn't bring a fight disadvantage.
-180 quick turn (L1+R1) to get the hell out of there, which RE later adopted.
-Moving while aiming! Revolutionary! :O
Grandpa's rant aside, I enjoyed the show, pity Jess couldn't enjoy this classic and go a bit further in the stream.
Looking forward to future games, especially Amnesia.
Also, like many have suggested already, the Resident Evil remake and F.E.A.R. might be good additions.

While I enjoyed the horror in silent hill 4, I resented it as a Silent Hill title. What kept me playing was the excellent music (naturally), and the interesting backstories...

Look at Jess's face at about 00:34 in, when there's a cut and Zorine is reaching for the game in front of her. She looks annoyed as hell. Do I sense some tension in the room? Makes me wonder what happened during the portion cut right there.

later on in the game, in the nowhere portion of the game. you enter a room with bodies laid out on tables on both sides of the room. blood soaking through the sheets covering them. in the back of the room is the nurse lisa, she starts talking to you, stands up, starts crying, shuffling towards you, blood gushing down her forehead. you leave the room right away and if you re-enter the room, lisa is gone but the bodies on the gurneys are still there laid out on display. for me that was the freakiest part of the game.

For me this is the best Silent Hill game of them all. The school level with the little 'bears' that replaced the babies from the Japanese version, the hospital level, the bossfights,... But mostly it was the first time the world changed when the siren sounded, that was and still is one of my best memories of gaming in 30 years. For most people SH2 is still the best one but not for me, pitty the series went downhill with SH4 The Room, it basicly put a bullet to the series head and killed it cause imo it never recoverd from this atrocity. Good thing the movies did the series some justice and still land in my dvd player from time to time :).

@Ravenlock_2112 Im from quebec in Canada. My ex-girlfriend had this game for her old PSX and I had never played it before. When I tried it the enemies were actually babies Ive never seen those bears before. Somehow the game was in english and nothing said it was the Japanese version. What could explain this?

@OuTLaWzGamer Well, my version is the same as these girls are playing. It arent actually 'bears' but something that could be described as little bearlike creatures (look at the video around 1:40). These have 3 long claws as where the Japanese version had something best described as skinned babies with a kitchenknife. As far as I remember they where removed from the western version due to the sensitive nature of it (even the US/Canada version). I seen pictures of the original creatures and the 'sensored' version in a gamesmagazine and there was a big difference. But that didnt change the fact that it was an awesome and even groundbreaking horror survival game that spawned 2 great follow ups b4 going downhill fast.

@Ravenlock_2112 @OuTLaWzGamer

There's some weirdness around the subject. I think the "teddy bears" are actually in the original japanese PAL release and the NTSC version has the (much creepier) grey kids.

Supposedly the EU PAL version also has the Mumblers (teddy bears) but they weren't in the version I played and I live in Europe. Then again me and my friends used to buy a lot of imports back then and we always checked for stuff like censorship so I probably picked the best version on purpose. I just can't remember it.

I don't know WHY the US has another version but it's clearly the better one.

@Zorine @Ravenlock_2112 SH1 is a classic no doubt about it, SH2 has the best story and narrative but my favorite one is the SH3 too I know is more like "action" stuff but it has very good moments you girls should play it even if zorine already finished i guess...

This is actually one of my least favorite Silent Hill games (I played it after playing SH2 and 3).

If you want to try a really weird horror game, you should play "Rule of Rose". It's a bit messed up...

Other Suggestions: Obscure, Cold Fear, Alone in the Dark (both the remake and the original), Nocturne (which I personally like, but many others don't) or the Blair Witch games (just not the third one).

I'd say "The Suffering" could make for a good episode; it has really disturbing monsters and settings, and it's sequel is even better.

I was 11 when I first played this, the most terrifying game I had ever played (been a gamer since I was 4) especially the hospital area, anyway I overcame my fears and beat the game.....only to get the bad ending where everyone dies. Bummer :(

@DarkNeoBahamut I too got the bad ending. There was this glass with blood on it on the floor. I was supposed to pick it up but I went to another room first and when I came back the glass was gone. My save was hours back so I ignored it and got punished with a bad ending.
