Perfect video series. Best (original!) Gamespot content these days. Kudos, Danny & Co.

Hardly from the dead, huge cult following there was at least a knock off every year where xcom kept getting mentioned. UFO series and there was another one.

Something that died, that I would love to see brought back is one of bullfrogs franchies; either black & white or dungeon keeper.

@soarlozer: There is War for the Overworld, as spiritual successor to DK, that I've heard is pretty good, and as for Black & White we got... Godus, I think. Yeah, I don't think we'll ever see another B&W again

@Stebsis: B&W does deserve a reboot but it was very unique, i doubt we will ever get one seeing as all the talent that made the game must be dispersed to the 4 winds by now.

And yeah, XCOM never died, it was the company that made it not the franchise itself, a franchise is its popularity, even if someone kills it out of incompetence it will surge back from the flames boosted to life by its popularity itself. Its the reason people stea... buy IPs, IPs are powerful.

@fallenstaph: Yup, they didn't pull the usual sell out on the name alone :).

Xcom Enemy Unknown is a fantastic game.

And I never really liked turned-based games before playing it. A wonderful wonderful game in general, regardless of genre.

@CruiserCaptain: Agreed. EU was definitely in my top 5 games on the 360, having never previously played a turn-based strat game. absolutely loved it. sad that the next one won't be coming to the One (think it's pc and PS4 only) but maybe sometime in the future. Didn't get quite into EW - not sure why - think EU scratched the itch as much as I needed it too, but EW was also great.

I guess if I get really desperate I can fire up Massive Chalice but it's not the same!

That opening, where he's talking about design, is something a lot of gamers should watch and remember.

I like remake, but I also see five big cons of tactical mode:

1. Small non-randomly generated maps. Self-explanatory.

2. Physics had no impact on combat. That was probably my biggest letdown. Such a shame that Firaxis didn't use physics engine to create new combat situations. E.g. grenade explosion could throw away a soldier or an alien. The same with shotgun blast. If you would destroy a house floor, whole building could collapse causing death/injuries of every character inside of it.. Unfortunately environment wasn't totally destructable which is another minus.

3. Fairly small amounts of equipment and lack of inventory. It's a limitation that have no sense at all in a game like XCOM.

4. Dynamic spawning. This is something that really pissed me off. Aliens weren't set up just before a battle. They were randomly spawned when player was close to their area of control and 'cinematically' set up. That would cause ridiculous situations, when aliens were being spawned in a place which I checked one turn earlier. Obviously after loading save file, aliens were being spawned elsewhere.

5. Lack of proper optimization for mouse and keyboard on PC and TV-focused interface. Gamepad was a basic control device, which is completely unacceptable in a computer tactical game. It should be the other way around! Effects? Too much clicking in situations when attack, movement or anything else could be activated by single click. Throwing a grenade through half of the map was a nightmare. Controls just went crazy without possibility of zooming out in aiming mode.

@Vojtass: I think #4 was talked about a lot, if I'm not mistaken it was mentioned too in Gamespot review. I hope they fix it, I understand that they want to make it new everytime you play it, but sometimes it makes the game felt cheap and you get cheated by it
