Is Far Cry 2 Better Than Far Cry 5?

Far Cry 2 and Far Cry 5 share some similarities, but differ hugely in other areas. The question is: which one is better? New episodes of Versus every Wednesday!

As you would expect, Far Cry 5 and Far Cry 2 share a bunch of similarities. They're both open-world shooters with a focus on emergent gameplay, exploration, and player choice. However, they also diverge in a number of ways.

At times, Far Cry 5 contains a much lighter tone than Far Cry games gone by, with goofy sidekicks and tongue-in-cheek quests. It brings the series to America for the first time, with a brighter color palette than Far Cry 2, which was famously a much more drab and punishing game to play.

Where Far Cry 5 opts to give you huge guns and powerful explosives from the get-go, Far Cry 2 forces you to work hard for its best weapons. The 2008 game also includes the controversial gun jamming feature, which annoyed some players at the time. It was things like the jamming and easily damaged vehicles that caused Far Cry 2 to receive a somewhat mixed reception upon its release, but as time has progressed the game has built something of a cult following. The more recent game in the series continues to tone down some of Far Cry's more antagonistic elements in favor of a more welcoming ride--though that doesn't mean it's easy, of course.

To decide which of the two games is best, we decided to sit down and argue about it. Watch the video above to watch old-school Far Cry fan Oscar Dayus get annoyed with Far Cry 5 lover Tamoor Hussain. The discussion begins with randomly selected topics, and the pair argue in support of their respective choices of game. Alongside the serious analysis of each title, there's also some fun-poking and jokes at each other's expense. Be sure to watch till the end to see the quick-fire round, which gets a little goofy.

Last week we put PS4 exclusives against Xbox One exclusives, and Oscar came out on top for the second week in a row while fighting for Sony's lineup of games. Make sure to make your voice heard this week by voting for who you think won the debate on YouTube or by commenting down below. Check back next week for another episode of Versus; new episodes drop every Wednesday at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM BST / 11 PM AET on GameSpot.com and YouTube.

Far Cry 2, my vote is for Far Cry 2. Far Cry 5 may be better in many respects compared to Far Cry 2 but remember guys Far Cry 2 came out almost a decade ago and I remember when I played Far Cry 2, i was completely submerged by its jaw dropping visuals and near perfect realism in game play. There was no game even close at that period with such level of immersion like Open World, Some wild animals, changing weather system, day and night cycle etc etc... I mean most recent games have learnt from what Far Cry 2 had given us a decade back.

So, Far Cry 2 is the big, big winner in my opinion. Far Cry 5 is not even close.

Far Cry 2 is a good game, no doubts. But there are plenty of things that FC5 is doing better:

1.Exploration - FC5 encourages you to walk on your feet, to look around and you almost always get some reward or interesting moment. FC2 exploration is dull - outside the camps there almost no life there.

2.Guns - I was laughing hysterically when it was said that FC2 games are "more realistic" that's an absolute bullshit! In FC2 even the famous AK-47 is jamming like some piece of shit after a few hundred shots! Is it realistic? Nope. The gunplay in FC2 is worst in the series. Period.

3. FC2 has that annoying events that repeat endlessly: you can't get a satisfactory message that the camp was cleared and this is safe zone now, you can't stop the fucking annoying "malaria attacks" which kicks in that same moment when you are need to retreat or your gun is busted, there are practically no non combat people - only the bandits... I could keep this for a looong time, but I think that's enough already.

FC2 was a good game when it came out (and is still not bad today) but action shooter paradigm has changed over the years, so FC5 wins this battle, despite not being so great at the release.

Whew! That was long. :)

A minor quip on Far Cry 5, why did they abandon any nudity in the game? Nice that both 3 and 4 were mature rated games, but in 5, it's like they started worrying about parental concerns. Developers should never cave, stay true to your art.

Far Cry 2 is the most immersive, realistic, and atmospheric. Nihilistic characters and narrative add to the immersion of existing in a bleak and hostile world, punctuated by gun jamming, malaria, and wildfire. In the end, Far Cry 2 is the most mature, most grim game in the series; and for me, the most fun.

I think that Far Cry 1 was not only the best far cry in the series but the best FPS i have ever played(and i have played a lot of games the last 25 years). It had a great complicated story(island of mutant experiments etc plot twists, Jack Carver(great guy) for protagonist etc), fantastic jungle sceneries(with great diversity between missions) very sophisticated structure(which allowed open world gameplay approach but storyline was tight not loose like all FC;s that followed) progressive enemy difficulty(you start facing enemies with t-shirts and no armor and at the end you have to face swat teams full of armor and shields in tight space) and for last ....horrifying monsters which scared the hell out of you with jumping attacks and screams(at times i felt like playing a horror game)...dont get me wrong i love all far cry games (especially 4 and primal) but the first is a pinnacle for the gender. i wish they could publish a remake with today's standards graphics and mechanics.

LOL Far Cry 5 is FAR better than Far Cry 2 in all aspect but it is different so it is hard to compare the old way of making shooters with this kind of new system. Everything mentionned can't stand against the companion system and all the removed repetitive gameplay you get in Far Cry 2 and almost all Ubisoft game today. It is a total non linear game but still have some cinematics starting in a weird non logical situation just to introduce the region. Graphics, sounds, animation, characters, weapons, missions.. everything is way better made than any previous Far Cry titles. It is more like a Ghost Recon Wildlands with better AI, First person view, non repetitive missions and buildings. Some missions similar to GTA, Mafia, Saints Row games but overall many new situations that can happen because of course of the companions and other characters fighting in your side.

Personally, Far Cry 2 is the weakest Far Cry game in the series. I only played halfway through it, I couldn't take the respawning enemies. It felt more like a shore than a game. I have yet to play 5, but I hope it's nothing like 2.

@ahpuck: Looking at FC5 (not played it myself yet), it seems to be carrying on and improving the formula introduced in FC3 - which was a world away from FC2 and an improvement in every way.

I can't say for sure, as I said I've not played it, but looking at footage on Twitch etc, I think it's fairly safe to say if you enjoyed FC3 & 4, you should enjoy FC5 too.

I personally enjoyed FC2 to a degree, but it felt aimless.

@Hordriss: Aimless is a good way to describe FC2. It was a gorgeous game for it's time, but after a while I hit the wall of boredom and never touched it again.

@ahpuck: Yeah it gets to that point when you're like "so where the hell do I go next?". It's an inherent problem with the way they designed the map in the game.

Farcry 2. My favorite Farcry. Also the Farcry I've spent the most time playing. I liked that 4 was coop, but to me nothing was as engaging as Farcry 2. I felt like I owned that wasteland after spending tons of time learning to overcome the mechanics designed to put you in harms way. Also, the video comparison on Youtube between 5 and 2 illustrates many of the reasons I found Farcry 2 as engaging as it was for me. When I played Farcry 5 I felt like everything I was doing was something I've done before in other games - sometimes other Farcry games, sometimes it's that generic, single-player, open world shooter that wants you to enjoy that you have endless options but forgets to have its own personality.

What? Of all the games in the series, why Far Cry 2? I remember playing the game and getting bored with it to the point that I never finished it. I’ve finished every other Far Cry. Nostalgia seems to override some people’s ability to objectively compare old video games against something contemporary. Or maybe Gamespot is just trolling us? Far Cry 5 is better in almost every aspect. Far from perfect, the world/scenery, characters and action has kept me amused for 40+ hours as much or more than any other entry in the series.

FC2 is the only one Far Cry I've played and not finished. Easily the worst. Typical play session from what I remember: Get mission in town, travel to mission... along the way get killed by enemy road block checkpoints (they will chase you to the end of the earth), start over... kill all enemies at road block, make it to objective... die or fail mission in some way, start over... try to outrun road block again...

The never ending spawning of enemies at road blocks and in bases along with no descent fast travel system made this game infuriating.

Ugh, no. Your nostalgia for FC2 is what makes it better than it really is. The world exploration is next to none. The outposts keep respawning over and over. The story is baren, the malaria sure gives you some kind of timer for your missions, but that's it.

The gun breaking details and wounding animations were very good, yeah, but that's it. The thing about wounded enemies helping each other was so uneven that I almost never did it on purpose, so it was unreliable at best.

FC1 on PC ( not the console spin-off ) was WAY better than FC2, if you want to do comparisons. And FC3 blows FC2 out of the water.

Far Cry 4 is one of the best game ever! I love the nature around in this game. The mountains there are perfect. I feel like to be under Everest.

Far Cry 2 is not good! Better Car Cry 1. But I m looking forward for 5.

Far Cry 2s focus on “realism” and immersion is ultimately what killed it. Technically it’s a good game and the mechanics incorporated were cool but got old quick. First or 2nd time my gun jammed I was like “ha!” After gun jam #10 it starts to feel watered down. People who love FC2 don’t realize it’s the reason why got the over-the-top FC3, which is the better game for a couple of reasons

How is this even a debate? Comparing the best game in the series (5) with the worst game in the series (2)

Far Cry 2 pissed the ever living **** out of me, where as Far Cry 5 was pure unadulterated fun from start to finish.

@dudebropartyyo: farccry 1 is owned by crytek studios not Ubisoft, Ubisoft leased the engine and bought the rights and then realised it's better to build the dunia engine for it. Now Ubisoft own the rights only upwards to farcry5 2 not 1.

Oh if your going to say care to explain arse pole why the spin offs where ilunder Ubisoft well thats obvious, it's called board room deals.

Never got to enjoy FC2. I understand that weapons breaking is something that somehow goes with the setting, but having to worry about my weapon not lasting forever and having to keep in check the Malaria that affects you, was something that was getting in the way of my fun more than helping the immersion. A lot of people were fine with that, but for me it was just a nuisance.

I have hated the all Far Crys since 2. 3 and 4 subsequent aweful cut scenes with changed controls were rubbish. They were shot em ups for children where you didn't have to make any effort or thought. I still go back and play a different character in a different decision tree even now when I get sick of everything else. Dumbed down for consoles and gutless video consoles.

You can pretty well avoid too much intrusion of malaria by making sure you get medicine early as possible. Never put it off. You get a heap of chances for diamonds and to increase your reputation when you go to get the medicine.

BTW you don't EVER have to have a jammed weapon. You return to a gunshop and swap your weapon after or before every mission. Never get a jam.

I don't like that I can't decide to be the hero who blows himself up at the end for a change of ending.

3 and 4 could have been pretty good but the stupid animals that should be attcking each other attack you as first choice . A cassorwary and a wild dog will attack each other well before they will attack a human. And the cut scenes with stopped me bothering to continue. The much more closed worlds also got to me compared to FC2. Never finished 3 and got to almost the end of 4 and chucked it.

I loved the FC2 weapons progression and the fact that you could partially engineer which weapons you developed to.

Graphic wise FC2 was good but full of bugs ( like the guy that shoots you from inside the big rock) but 3 and 4 were as well. And the fact that enemies could see you when it was impossible in all of them was a pain. FC4 flying machine that had random ceilings depending on where they didn't want you to go, and the BS flying suit...

Primal should not have been a Far Cry. Stone age weapons...no thanks...

I liked original Far Cry (one) but had so many bugs that never could finish it. I wanted to but was unable to stop it looping near the end.

FC5 has a story line that doesn't appeal to me. I may still give it a go, seeing there is less and less single player games and online isn't a viable option for me ( BF1 and World of Tanks and Sniper 3 are unplayable with 15M download and 20-50k upload speeds.)

But of all the games I have played for years, FC2 is still the on I go back to. A FC2 revisited with upgraded graphics ( it is a dx9 game that will so of run 10), keep the games memory and cpu hungry AI and improve it, keep the single player AND the local own server option that allows more players ( best own server game ever played both coop and individual), Keep all the original prarmeters and add amybe a few weapons, improve the silenced weapon hit power ( silenced weapons are usually more potent not less), And give the enemy a bit more dialogue and you will have a whole new generation of converts.

Kinda a silly question but what ever.

Well let's see for a variety of reasons:

1a) far cry 2 has a full editor out of the box with multiplayer, death(m)watch, objective capture the flag(like halo forge for those who don't know but more serious and open.)

1b) far cry 5 has a editor that offers far cry 4, primal and other treats in far cry 5, while extremely locked down with understanding of what made far cry 2 great, while building on that with far cry 3.)

2a) far cry 5 campaign is better then far cry 2 in a few ways, it has a better engine, and has features that have been learnt and passed on into the games environment that creates a rich atmosphere with a breathable world(taken out of final fantasies text book, those can agree to disagree)

2b) far cry 2 is better then far cry 5 because the map is larger, (but doesnt always mean better) and your freedom to do what you want and make mistakes while the game knows it yet doesn't achknowledge it. The murkyness of the atmosphere and grottynes of everything breaking down. The feel your going to find something and expect angry ai's that do not stop under Andy condition.

Overall far cry 5 will never be the game it needs to be as long as the editor is in place because far cry 2 ands 3 are better games in a overall package, Why? Because it shows Ubisoft doesn't trust their customers enough with their Engine and learn why the map editors great. No what they do is build a game fail and expect to collect data on each gamer to build a image on what the consumer wants.

If Ubisoft wants great games give the public what they want a editor they can make games in and then Ubisoft can see what is worth a potential game or not.

Learn from epic studios, let player unknowns team build a game under blue hole studios, then make a game called battle royale. Then you can make games all you want.

Because the current formula Ubisoft is using isn't working.( While I end it here some in the mean time wrote this)

Person below writes: (well their making money, so I can't see their actually doing anything wrong.

When I go to a casino and see gambling machines I also don't see anything wrong because they to are making money so I can't see the problem)

It's hard to separate preference from evaluating the debate here but I think Far Cry 2 won.

Far Cry 5 may accommodate plenty of play types but it's a Jack of all trades, master of none. FC2 had identity. FC5 feels like it's trying to appeal to everyone, it has no real confidence in a singular vision.

The worst thing about FC2 was the respawning enemies. The map forced you to travel through certain corridors often & having to kill the same enemies every time became tedious & an annoyance. It also detracted from the feeling that you were making any difference by being there. FC5 gives the player that satisfaction by clearing out outposts & eventually each region. Personally I think there are far too many enemies spawning in FC5, even after taking a significant number of outposts but that seems more to do with the game's love for chaos.

FC5 is a very polished game but there's just nothing new. Imagine being served the same meal, day after day as the chef perfects the dish. When it comes to the final dish, it's great but... it's kinda still the same thing you've been eating every day. That's what Ubisoft games feel like now.

I do not think it is a matter of winning a debate here. It has to do with preference. I had more fun with 5. I found 2 annoying, with the malaria, and jamming guns and such. When I was done with Far Cry 2's story, I immediately traded it in, as I knew I wasn't going to play it again. I am not saying it was bad. If you are looking for more of a sim, 2 might be better. I personally am looking for a fun game. In that vein, 5 was better for me.

Far Cry 2 had great ideas and set the stage for what would follow, but it didn't have enough time in the incubator. There were frustrating mechanics that felt cheap, and there's a low-rent feel to the story and dialogue, like nobody really cares about what they're saying. I'd love if Far Cry went back to Africa in a future game, as Ubisoft have the formula down now.
