Is Pre-Ordering Games A Good Idea? - Steam Punks

The decision to pre-order or not to pre-order plagues gamers torn between bonuses, discounts, and losing the gamble. We talk about the times it's been worth buying early and the times it really, really wasn't.

In this week’s episode of Steam Punks, GameSpot’s PC-focussed show, we tackle whether or not you should be pre-ordering games. We explain when we’ve done it in the past, whether we’ll do it going forward, and what games we’ve been burned by (I’m looking at you, Watch Dogs).

Pre-ordering and incentives to pre-order, like in-game bonuses, have become extremely common, but they've also become extremely controversial. The idea of pre-ordering becomes problematic when the marketing for certain games don’t line up with the finished product, something which has spurred a sect of gamers to participate in a pre-order boycott. In the wake of the biggest game release season of the year, we talk about whether it’s ultimately worth purchasing games before knowing if they’re worth the money.

Pre-orders originated from a time when brick-and-mortar retail stores would only have so many copies of each game, so it was important to get your pre-order in to ensure you would get one of those copies. That time is well and truly gone and now pre-ordering is based around publishers attempting to entice gamers into committing their dollars early with a variety of bonuses only available to those who purchase the game before release. Sometimes those bonuses are very worthwhile and sometimes they’re meaningless. A fairly new kind of pre-order bonus is access to pre-release betas, such is the case with Fallout 76. This presents yet another difficult player-unfriendly stepping stone as gamers want to get a sense for the game through the beta but are unable to unless they commit to a purchase.

Games like No Man’s Sky, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Watch Dogs contributed to the disappointment around placing pre-orders for games that ultimately ended up falling short of expectations. On the other hand, we discuss many cases where we were glad we placed pre-orders or supported Kickstarters, and discover that there appears to be a connection between having pre-existing faith in the developer or series and feeling confident in pre-ordering.

What do you think of pre-orders? Do you support the boycott, or do you enjoy the bonuses or discounts that come with purchasing early? Let us know what pre-orders you’ve been burned by and what PC topics you’d like to see us discuss on the show next week!

Pre-ordering in 2018 is unnecessary except in the case where you know and trust the developer and you want to support them. God of War, Spider-Man, Battlefield, I know I will play and love these games so I pre-order them. As for everything else, if you're not sure just wait for the reviews or a sale.

@dethstorm35: Are you sure about Battlefield? This was a series I put thousands of hours of enjoyment into around the BF3 era but look what it has become. I took BF5 off my wishlist because from what I've seen it's strayed too far from massive destructive battlefields in favour of smaller action based arenas like COD. If I wanted COD I'd buy that, BF will lose heaps of fans over this. You know nothing until it's released, most series flop at one point, but that doesn't mean they can't reinvent themselves and return stronger like God of War and Assassin's Creed did.

@NTenseify: Battlefield 1 is amazing. I love it and still play it. I will continue to play it long after Battlefield 5 releases. I really can't judge 5 based on two maps. The two they released in the beta were not small, they were pretty good sized maps but we will see what happens when it releases. I'm sure I will like it and all DLC is free this time. Can't go wrong with that.

Hey Mass Effect Andromeda was a good game and well worth the pre order, you cant put it in the same category as no mans sky which was a complete garbage and defenetly not worth the pre order, I wouldn't even buy it for 5 bucks.

I really dislike the way companies offer pre-order incentives and bonuses. Exclusive pre-order items are even worse, because someone may not be aware of the game or its pending release (not everyone keeps up to date with game news and release schedules). People shouldn't be penalised for discovering a game post-release and potentially be denied content just because their life doesn't revolve around gaming.

I only pre-order games I'm sure I want to play based on the merits of that developer's previous work. The thing is, I would be pre-ordering these games without any pre-order incentive. For example, I've pre-ordered games from Naughty Dog and Rockstar in the past because I know I want to play them. Yes, there's a chance the game could be disappointing, but I'd still want to play it to make up my own mind.

If there's a game I'm on the fence about or the developer's track record is unproven, a pre-order bonus is not going to make me buy the game and I resent potentially missing out on content for not pre-ordering. It's a dirty sales tactic and I wish it would go away but it won't because it's the same people that come up with this type of idea that have introduced FTP (PTW) pricing models and loot crates etc. It's the people who's job it is to maximise profit and publishers rather than the creative minds that actually develop the games.

Back in the day preordering started because AAA games would sell out within hours, so in order to get your copy, you should preorder. I worked at Funcoland/GameStop way back in the day...

Times are different now and with the numerous places online to purchase games, its not needed.

Aside of that, its a bad idea because game developers are pushing out half finished games and thinking its ok because they have millions presold on preorders.

Plain and simple, no... It's not a good idea. It can be a surefire game like red dead 2, or a piece of garbage like call of duty... Regardless, it's not a good idea. Basically not consumer friendly. Many markets have stupid consumers, but goddamn... the gaming market takes the cake, lol DLCs, pre-orders, loot boxes, people paying real money to have more time to play goddamn candy crush smh... These idiots deserves to be scammed.

The only thing that comes to mind was the new Crash trilogy. Other than that, I don't pre-order. A big reason why is the game turns out poorly and I ended up wasting a full retail price on a piece of junk. And most of the time the pre-order bonus is awful anyways. It's normally just some cosmetic item and isn't anything worthwhile. If they actually made the bonuses worth pre-ordering for then maybe I'd be inclined to think differently.

And then they try the whole "pre-order to play early" junk and it's just laughable. Come on now. If people who don't even do this for a living can put out their own mod that trumps anything you put out available for a pre-order bonus then it shouldn't be a bonus.

I preorder everything. It costs $0 and if the reviews are not good I just return it and keep the preorder bonus.

I mean, who even pays money for preorder anymore? Do you guys all shop at Gamestop or something?

Sure. Paying for something, WELL before you get it, know precisely what it is, and any regards for its quality? Of course this is a good idea! I mean.... what could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Why is this question being asked still? Isn't it obvious?

I hardly ever pre-order anything but if I do, never digitally, only physical copies and only games I am sure will be good or sequel's to games that I love. Watch dogs and mass effect andromeda were definitely two pre order regrets that come to mind.

I only ever pre-ordered physical copies of games (which, nowadays, is never). I have yet to pre-order anything digital. The slight cut to the price is not worth it to me.

Being a mainly offline gamer, I've adopted a catch-up routine. I am usually a year behind buying any new release games. By then, the price has come down quite a bit. Also most (or all) the DLC has come out, giving me a feeling of a more complete game. Most of the bugs have been fixed also.

Doesn't work in the same way for online only games, as they are more time limited. I usually still don't pre-order those as they typically have many server problems on release.

If I were to suggest a way to get me to buy a pre-order game, it would be an extended return. Allow extra time to play the game to see if it is really fun or not completely broken. It feels some games have long openings to purposely get by the return time limit (playing on Steam). By the time you discover any problems or realise the game is not fun, the time limit has expired.

I do pre-order from publishers I know and franchise and the bonuses are really good .

Which means almost never triple A games, overhyped game, or EA/BETHESDA/UBISOFT games.

I've pre-ordered games from time to time, but only from publishers and franchises I am familiar with. I would not have a problem pre-ordering a new Fallout game for example, but I'm not going to pre-order Fallout 76 because it's a completely different animal.

I did pre-order Gearbox's Aliens game, based on my experience with Borderlands. Thought I could trust them. When it was universally trashed though, I quickly returned my unopened game for a full refund. That's how I handle pre-orders that I'm not 100% sure of. I might pre-order to get the extra stuff, but before I open it, I'll check out what others are saying about it.

Pre-ordering absolutely baffles me. I see a lot of comments here that says "I only pre-order if I'm confident the game will be good." The game will be good whether you pre-order or not and the days of stores running out of copies are gone. So why pre-order??? I have pre-ordered for in-game bonuses which sometimes were worth it. But aside from that, pre-ordering absolutely makes zero sense other than some kind of messed up belief that somehow you're supporting the developer more by pre-ordering than by buying the game at launch.

@NTenseify: it is a psychological disorder then... unless someone is pre-ordering a collector's edition which will have limited stock, there is no reason to pre-order. the only times i might consider it is if there is a steelbook i am interested in, such as the one given out with yakuza kiwami 2, etc...

@Xristophoros: I absolutely agree, when you confront these people about their irrational decision, you get an answer like "Well I have the money so I pre-ordered the game so that I won't waste the money on something else". This makes zero sense and shows a complete lack of self control, it is psychological and big companies prey on that stuff for their marketing tactics to work. They know how weak minds work.

As you guys/gals mentioned, it's a double edged sword. I too found the first watchdogs a pile of **** compared to other "certain" open-world experiences.

I loved Mass Effect 3 and pre-ordered the awesome N7 Edition and loved the DLC (especially From Ashes). On the other hand, I haven't even bought Andromeda yet, too much mixed stuff, but will play at some point.

Back to the main article focus, I am really looking forward to certain games too. The game I look forward to most, I usually pre-order and thats it, just one game for a few months early. I pre-ordered Two Point Hospital and think it's awesome.

I have now pre-ordered the digital enhanced deluxe of COD BO 4 (hate me lol) as I think it looks the best shooter this year. I shall buy BFV, but not pre-order. I need a new RTX GPU for that too lol.

My bottom line is - I never Pre-order more than one game at a time; pre-ordering only my most wanted game. That way I can only get shafted once, but rarely happens :)

I only ever pre-order games when I believe in the developer/publisher and their business practices. That way even if the game doesn't live up to my hopes and expectations, I don't mind because I still supported the guys working hard and pouring their passion into it.

@RSM-HQ: Monster Hunter is Destiny in a completely different setting. I am no fan of games with no purpose. Kill, kill, kill for loot. But for wat? Theres no story. Theres no purpose. It was simply boring. Im not trying to bait any1 or 'troll'. To each their own. I can care less bout their free content either. Empty DLC is empty DLC.

@blkmac: Monster Hunter was way before Destiny, plays nothing like it, Destiny never had complex game mechanics. It's a sponge MOBA FPS. While MH is an Action RPG.

What you find boring is contrived, Monster Hunter is loved because it has great gameplay with plenty of variety, and by plenty, I mean more than any game you could name on a whim.

Story means nothing if the gameplay is garbage. They're called "games" after all. And if you only buy 'games' to witness a plot, you do not represent what is quality in the gaming industry, only encouraging we move away from it.

Gameplay

Is

King

And considering World just went over 10mil copies, seems many agree it's a great gaming franchise.

"Empty DLC is empty DLC."

I don't think you know what empty means either. Go buy a Telltale episode or something.

@RSM-HQ: He's got a point. While the style of the games is different, they both lack purpose beyond grinding for gear.

The gameplay in both is fun...for a while. But without a quality story it's all just kind of meaningless.

@velcroboy: I disagree, MH has a competitive tournament scene for a reason. If you like story games, that's all well and good but blaming an excellent game for focusing on gameplay is redundant when that's the core appeal of games.

So long as the gameplay has depth and variety, it weeds out the repetitive aspect. Something MH has.

And gameplay isnt everything cuz FFXV had amazing gameplay and look hpw that turned out. Story was god awful. When i play a game, i want a reason to play. Not like Destiny or MH where i jus kill and get different clothing. Thats garbage. Trash.

@blkmac: Which MH are you referring to? MH has been the exact same game for 14 years with minor changes to the game play every couple years, so if you were expecting something different it's because you didn't do enough research on it. It's not a garbage game just because you thought it was something that it wasn't. You kill things, make items, and kill more things, it does exactly what it has advertised. It's not for everyone though, my friend would have never stuck with it for longer than 10 minutes if I wasn't helping her figure out all the systems because there's so much information thrown at you. Destiny 2 was a deceitful shallow piece of shit though, I figured they learned their lesson from the first game and as soon as I hit max level I quit playing within a couple days after some pvp because it was boring as hell with a really terrible grind for item level.

@TacticaI: "We" assumes you speak for more than yourself lol. For one who claims the importance of entitlement you don't understand the meaning.

Even if you tried one of the demo builds, what do I care? And what does that tell me anyway (you suck at Monster Hunter, you have no friends to play with, don't like learning something with depth???) Regardless, doesn't make you some kind of ambassador for Gamers at anyrate.

World is critically one of the best received games of 2018 fact, has a successful tournament scene fact, along with selling over 10 million fact;

and you Mr "we" are not one of them as you put it- "dropped a dime on it" fact

And yet it's a widely considered masterpiece despite you thinking otherwise. Nice opinion of the "we" you have_ it seems to represent a small and troII'ish minority.

I very rarely pre order. Pre order bonuses do not really add anything to the game. No game company is gonna release a game that needs the pre order bonus to be good. it would not even make sense. Nowadays I usually wait for the price to go down a little. Also, most games nowadays are released unfinished and require patches to fulfill their potential so it is not worth playing the game from day one.

i only buy games when the price drops so no, i also don't see any upside to pre ordering, i mean the game has to be good without the pre orders otherwise it's not a good game, i have a bunch of games to buy and play that came out years ago, so i really don't see the need.
