Life Is Strange 2 Spin-off: What We Can Learn From The Awesome Adventures Of Captain Spirit

Life Is Strange 2 has been officially revealed with scant details. We see what The Awesome Adventures Of Captain Spirit and the series so far can tell us about the direction of the next season!

When Life is Strange first launched, the industry was deep in the golden age of Telltale adventure games. Just months prior Telltale had wrapped The Walking Dead: Season 2 and The Wolf Among Us, and it was well into one of its best entries to date, Tales From The Borderlands, while simultaneously releasing the widely anticipated Game of Thrones series. By January of 2015 we were pretty damn inundated in episodic choice-driven narrative adventures. Life is Strange could only succeed by proving it had a story worth telling, and the tools to do it in a wholly different way than what was already on the market, and that’s exactly what it did.

The Life is Strange series is far more than meets the eye. It constantly deepens the stakes, characters evolve in response to their circumstances in meaningful ways, and deciding whether or not to rifle through a friend’s room can mean life or death. It’s not just linear storytelling either, Max’s rewind mechanic in Life is Strange was an excellent way of returning agency to players who had become used to Telltale’s ticking clock on decision making. As exciting as that mechanic was, the prequel, Before The Storm, developed by Deck Nine, illustrated that the series had a strong foundation in its characters and world even without the supernatural elements. It doubled down hard on creating well-rounded characters who spoke and felt like real people you actually cared about. That’s what makes the Life is Strange series so successful, and it’s a success that continues in the newest entry, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit.

Check out the full video feature above to find out what we're expecting from Life is Strange 2 after our experiences with the series so far. The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is available now for free on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Life is Strange 2 is arriving with the first of five episodes on September 27.

I just can't see what's the praise about this game. From all I can tell it's a walking simulator with pretty much nothing happening really.

@jack00: I can probably help answer that question, as someone who wasn't interested in LiS until last year and now it is one of my favourite games of all time.

1) Superior to Telltale games: With Telltale apparently having a monopoly on narrative choice driven games, it seemed like a good time for players like me who enjoy stories (I like using games as 'books'). However, LiS opened my eyes to the fact that Telltale's game qualities were not that great - aside from Wolf Among Us, Walking Dead S1-S2, and Tales from the Borderlands, they were starting to falter. And their horrendously aging Telltale engine was keeping them behind.

LiS used a superior engine with better animations and graphics, as well as far less bugs. In other words, they set up a new high bar for narrative choice driven games. Just overall superior. It's difficult to go back to Telltale engine games knowing DONTNOD exists.

2) Great story that hits close to home: LiS caught on with me due to it's far more relatable characters and story. Yes, there is a sci-fi element to it due to time travel powers, but the whole story is basically teenage coming-of-age drama that takes some very interesting turns. Unlike most games however, I actually felt a lot of connection/emotional attachment to these characters - they're far more memorable, and depending on your own personal experiences, are a reflection of many of the stuff we face.

3) Representation and interesting topics: I know many players who resonate with the game due to representation of stuff that you normally don't see in games. Whether it's LGBQ, bullying, depression, mental health, trauma/losses, etc. It tackles a wide variety of interesting topics that I think people in general avoid too much - unnecessary stigmatism, really. For me personally, I played the game when I was at a low point in my life, feeling much sadder than usual. The game helped me opened my eyes to, well, life in general, and in a way helped me cope with my problems at the time. Again, it helped that the storytelling and character development were superior to Telltale games.

Basically, it's like the best $5 most people interested in a story could spend.

I can't wait for Life is Strange 2 to be released. I prefer to play when all the episodes are released, so I play episodes back to back.

These are not games, they are interactive movies.

@Janpieterzun: Depends on your definition of a game, I suppose. In 2018 it seems to be broader and broader which I personally really love, different forms of interactivity and the way it fits with storytelling is so interesting to me.
