Metal Gear Solid: Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts Discusses The MGS Movie

Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts talked with us at SDCC 2018 about his vision for his Metal Gear Solid movie!

The Metal Gear Solid movie is still a long way off. Its director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, attached himself to the adaptation unusually early in the process, through a combination of passion, determination, and hard work. Back in 2014, he was relatively untested; now, with last year's successful Kong: Skull Island on his resume, he's hard at work on the project closest to his heart.

We caught up with Vogt-Roberts at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 to discuss the status of the Metal Gear Solid movie, including the brand new art the director has been tweeting. There have been some updates since the last time we chatted with him. Watch the video above.

To celebrate the series' 31st anniversary, Vogt-Roberts sent out a note recently marking the date, and promised he'll be dropping 31 days of fan art with "some surprises along the way."

He provided a playful CODEC scene with Roy Campbell explaining that Snake has been sent to retrieve new information about the Metal Gear Solid movie. In the meantime, he's giving us a look at concept art he's created, though the message is careful to note that this shouldn't be interpreted as hints at the film itself.

"As a thank you to fans of this franchise, that bearded director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, will be releasing concept art he created with a series of 'next-gen artists,'" reads the message. "For the next 31 days, we will be releasing 31 pieces of art. We must stress that this is, quote, 'fan art', and is not meant to represent what is or not in the forthcoming film."

That doesn't mean the MGS movie is off the table at Sony--it's just probably still a long way off. However, one of the director's goals includes debuting the movie officially with a Comic-Con panel, which we discussed in the video above.

Just add Micheal Ironside with a wigg on playering the voice of raidens mother, and add Lawrence fishbone as the commander offering drugs on the street to the special ops people.

And try to include Jason staphylococcus as the robots as a alternative the brute.

Don't need it.

Snake is who I made him to be, who you made him to be.

He's the man who crawled through the microwave chamber, fist-bumped Otocon, brawled with Gray Fox and Liquid, had a stand-off with Sniper Wolf and commenced Operation Intrude, all the while keeping a stern face and an a piercing gaze.

I read his mind through all of that, just like you did, and we understood him.

To hear about Metal Gear getting a movie adaptation casting God-knows-who and directed by the guy who made Kong, makes me as interested as I was for "Metal Gear" Survive.

@nibbin1191: Didn't watched the video, but he really said next generation artists? wth

But anyway, a passionate director is usually something positive. Some of them failed, but there's always something positive in their attempts.. Like in the WoW movie, at least the orc visuals were pretty cool. From the MGS movie, we can at least expect something positive out of it, idk. Maybe they can cast a great Solid Snake, that alone would be something interesting.

@nibbin1191: Sure, but you acted like the passion of the dude was something negative. At least his pushing, forcing things to happen, etc.. That's commendable, willing or not. There are a bunch of movies made with zero passion, mainstream movies like the entire MCU for example. Soulless sequels, etc.. but then a passionate director shows up and he give us Blade Runner 2049. Without these kind of efforts, the industry keeps pushing recycled stuff. And for a movie like Metal Gear to happen (and even WoW can serve as an example), you need tons of effort coming from everybody involved. The guy is selling the idea, he is at least trying (and failing).

@nibbin1191: Blade Runner is a good example because even if the plot was kinda divisive, I consider 2049 a successful sequel. They followed the plot, the visuals, the music, etc.. It is a legit sequel on an "design" standpoint. Fury Road is another example of a legit sequel made by a passionate dude, etc.. Usually in many lines of work, when we mix emotions.. That can be a negative. But regarding art in general, passion is a good thing. And you are right about gamespot forcing the issue with their "news", lol But it's a rss feed at the end of the day, there's lots of minor stuff. At least this "story" involves videogames to some degree. And some english practice to me, lol And considering you talked about cynicism... this behavior can make things looks worse than they really are. For me, honestly, this looks like a unknown director trying to sell his idea. No reason to treat that with such cynicism. At least we know there's some people in hollywood that are fans of MGS just like we.

@nibbin1191: But the thing about MGS is that it literally appears from hazy shadows. All the silence, mind tricks and double crosses of Kojima should be a part of the movie too
