More Details On Star Wars: Squadrons From Creative Director

EA Motive's Ian Frazier explains why TIE Fighters aren't at a disadvantage against X-Wings, why you're locked to a first-person view, and more details on the upcoming $40 game.

Star Wars: Squadrons brings back the classic dogfighting gameplay seen in classics like the X-Wing and TIE Fighter series. In an interview with GameSpot, EA Motive's Ian Frazier talks about the series' roots, how the studio balanced New Republic and Imperial craft, and how team composition can make or break your victory.

The comparisons to the classic Lucasarts series are readily apparent, especially as you're locked to cockpit view and can shift your ship's priorities between weapons, engines, and shields. But that's not the only way Motive drew inspiration. Frazier opened up about how the studio looked back at the strategies from those older games to help the nimble but fragile TIE Fighter feel like a match for the hearty and more full-featured X-Wing.

Whichever side of the conflict you fall on, team composition will make a huge difference. Frazier also detailed how load-outs will be important not just for your own starfighter, but also for coordinating with your teammates. And to avoid what he calls the "death loop" of two pilots simply chasing each other down, Motive has put in a few advanced maneuverability strategies for ace pilots to outgun the competition.

It looks like it might be good for a laugh, but they would have had much more success with a full fledged 15-20 hour single player campaing (or even a co-op option) to go through along with the multiplayer aspect. I also don't like how gamey the multiplayer is. It's too limiting. I think it will be popular for a while but without massive expansions I just don't know how long it will be popular. It's not like Star Wars is at peak popularity right now.

It's a drag that this one won't have a 3rd-person view.

I'll wait and see. The starfighter modes of SWBF2 are truly fun.

I may buy it if the single player part is more that 4/5 hours long, I really miss games like colony wars, it feels like ages since I played a space combat game

I still don't get the point of space battles in the star wars universe. When when Disney made it clear in The Last Jedi all people need to do is use the jump drive to destroy whole fleets. So will they just let X-wing jump to destroy whole fights? So no more gravity well in universe XD

@agentred: In Rise of Skywalker a character actually asks why they don't just do that again when the fleet of Star Destroyers shows up, and the another character says something like it was a one in a million shot that would never work again.

It's extremely dumb.

@mogan: I guess I wasn't paying attention during that part of the movie, I wasn't too interested in the last movie. It kind of felt like this just wanted to end it and work on other projects.

@agentred: I can't blame you for zoning out during Rise of Skywalker.

I don't buy into the narrative that the Sequels made the Prequels retroactively not suck, but Rise of Skywalker makes Attack of the Clones seem watchable by comparison.

I already know how bad this game will be. But EA thinks in numbers. They just need 100,000 mix of kids, moms, sadlings, to get a copy and that’ll bring in a couple of millions. This is just one of their sideshow projects.

Single player campaign & CO-OP PVE would be the core for me. I love SWBF1 & have mastered it, but not the fighter portion of it. Casual & easy mode is VERY important in this game for me in order to keep me wanting to continue to play & learn so then I might have the desire to play more advanced settings. Otherwise, dunno I am not sure I want to put in the extensive time to get better at it.

1St person really kills it for me in this game. I play all my fighter games in 3rd person & NEVER play them in 1st. WHY, why, why????(P^*)%&$))^(()&^%*%_). I don't care their reason for YOU ARE the starfighter pilot, I want 3rd person end of story!

Honestly, already out of the gate this looks like a wait for deep sale & that I probably won't play it much! Why would you want to segregate your audience & not include 3rd person. Do the game devs have brains, why???????????? If the game requires you to be 1st person ONLY, then DON'T MAKE THE GAME! Make one with both perspectives!!!!!!
