I believe this is true because it comes from having special physical actions.

Sure you can knock them out for hours with the right drug! FEMA in the USA is developing it now in preparation for Deus Ex. ;)

Dont encourage the "Knockout Game"

That's why I play Thief with "no knock-outs" mode on :)

Hey Cam, where are you doing your research for "psychological" episodes? You have favourite sites of some sort? Surely you can't just remember all those things :D

He forgot to talk about putting someone in a headlock thereby cutting off all blood to the brain, causing the person to black out? I don't don't believe this causes trauma to the brain. And most likely the person will regain consciousness within minutes.

I have always wondered about this. I'm glad you did an episode on it. It's cool to compare the common features of games with real life. But now I feel slightly bad for causing so much brain damage :P Thanks Cam

Was this just a sneaky way of educating the morons who can't differentiate between video games and real life? I suspect it is. I'm no brain surgeon, but things like this really shouldn't need to be explained.

The "knockout game" is extremely dangerous. It can cause severe cranial nerve damage leading to debilitation, brain bleeding, or worse. Permanent brain damage and death isn't funny. I plan on getting my CHL, and if some idiot tries to play knockout game with me or my loved ones if they're with me at the time, I won't hesitate to shoot them.

and that's why we ghost in Splinter Cell and Dishonored. by the way there is a way to knock someone out without causing brain damage by chokeholding them. but, instead of stopping the oxygen supply to the brain, you use a technique to stop the blood flow.

enemy is not knocked out for a long time though

I wonder how many people died because of this trope, with criminals thinking they can just whack someone on the head as in the movies.

also fun fact, an overdose of tranquilizers can result in the opposite effect and leave the victim even more pissed off.

If you really want to be scientifically correct, in mgs you can't knock out someone for hours only seconds, minute at max. Even the tranquilizer gun effect lasts only for a few minutes.

Sooo, every guard I knocked out in Teef now has severe brain damage........COOL!

This happens all the time in movies. Just a knock to the back of the head will do it.

What about choking a guy out or using some sleeper hold? You know? Like in the Dishonored clip you showed?

Guards gotta unionize like the NFL. Lawyer up and get some mouth guards and better helmets while serial head smashers are on the prowl.

I'm sure some devs use it as a way to avoid a more aggressive rating in case they want it to be T for Teens or something. It has always seems kind of stupid to me, especially because some games allow you to drag unconscious bodies around, toss them off buildings, etc. and they are still considered unconscious rather than dead.

thanks alot Cam for this show..I am currently playing Thief right now i completed all my stages yet with ghost rank ..the ideah of knockout for sleeping for a thief i don't like ..you are playing as a thief and you want no one knows that you are here and not later in a soon time , and there is no "knockout for HOURS" as you said ..for the violent games i will choose knocking-out instead of eliminate

Movies have done this for decades. I'm sure a lot of people actually think its that simple and is harmless to the victim :/
