Many people play video games, it just comes down to which ones are worthwhile.

These stats are so far off. I guarantee you that of the 48% of women that are "gamers", less than 5% would consider themselves gamers. And, come on, games on a phone don't count.

The stat for women gamers includes people who have only ever played candy crush on their cellphone. The statistic for women who actually play games on a platform other than mobile is around half that. I'm not saying mobile games don't count as games, but the mom on the bus next to me who's playing candy crush doesn't consider herself a gamer, and doesn't spend money on games most likely. Because by that definition my dad who plays solitaire on his iPad's a gamer since he paid money for that app (probably). I just wish the statistic was given context, but it never is. But it makes it difficult for the Anita's of the world to call Gaming a boys club... Imagine if little kids were all like we're tired of being harassed for having high voices and being annoying. If you just don't use a mic no one is aware of your age or gender, if it's really such a big deal to you. I just always mute everyone in public games because people talk to their friend next to them while the mics on, or it's just static.

1.6 billion people on the net and the rest of the 7.5 billion are in a war or a riot or a 3rd world country right now. So we are pretty lucky to be a part of the 1.6 billion. I have been to the movies for years.

First. My favorite number is e. If you know what it is you likely know why.

Second. If this industry is so big why do all the games with huge AAA budgets release in such an unpolished state?

@cratecruncher i know what it is and how much e is but i have no idea why you like it.

because quantity over quallity is in place here. the industry is too big and everybody releases crap just to take a bite from the big cake. the industry needs to mature and that hasnt happened yet.

@cameronrobinson I find that last comparison rather unfair. If we are going to compare game sales in the US with sales in the movie industry we should not limit ourselves to ticket sales. This comparison should include dvd sales and other means of owning a copy of a movie. Furthermore, given that buying a ticket doesn't mean the buyer gets to own a copy of the film I would consider taking box office sales out of the equation. But that doesn't really seem fair either, since it wouldn't acknowledge the difference between both industries business models. How does it look when you compare overall sales side to side?

Strange how he pointed out that women over 17 make up 36% of gamers compared to males under 18 making up 17%.

Why did that need a comparison?!

@Pewbert I believe he was just pointing out the disparity between popular conception and reality. The popular misconception is that gamers are mostly young males. His comparison showed that not only are young males not the majority but even adult women, the type of person that is seen as least likely to play games, make up a much larger percentage.

the number for internet users has to be inaccurate, I'm sure more than 90 percent of gamers use the internet, not just to play games, but to update their games download DLC's, and download their games, and for PC gamers most the games say they require access to internet in order to play them (normally only to install, mostly to prevent pirating) so if the numbers are true that means that there are very few people besides gamers that use the internet... some one tell me if what i'm saying makes sense at all xD

@TheKokopelli I actually thought the number was higher for both gamers and internet usesers, i was thinking more like atleast 3 billion for internet uses and like about 2 billion for gamers, considering the population of the earth is a little over 7 billion, also surprised at how many older gamers there was as well, i figured 18 and lower would have the most amount of gamers

@FuzzyPancakes in relation to older gamers, over 36 are the people when they were kids first nintendo console and before were expensive and parents at that time it was new to them and would not buy them one, as those kids became independent they have there own money and have the money to play games now. and of course it can be fun to play

@lorider25 You seriously don't know any women that enjoy gaming? Ask your female friends and I bet you'll find several that play video games -at least casually.

I would like to see these numbers without the casual, social or mobile games. I know more girls that watch anime than girls who play video-games not including those 3 categories.

I'd be more interested in stats that didn't include mobile gaming. I just can't see things like Candy Crush as anything but time wasters people play while they poop or wait for the bus.
