I'm not sure today's gamers can handle a space fighter sim. No checkpoints and no hand-holding? Can't do it.

@PacoTaco It's not about hand holding, really - it's about having a good tutorial that doesn't leave out the details (so "youngins" and veterans alike dont have to results to mr. Google and forums to find out how the game mechanics work).

This seems like a good place to ask.

What are you guys using for a Joystick these days? I used to have a Sidewinder and a Wingman Strike FF but I've long since misplaced them so I'd like to get a new one.

Also if I get a modern joystick (most likely usb) will it work in old dosbox type games like Rebel Assault, Wing Commander, X-Wing....

I've been looking at the X-55 Rhino by Saitek. That's the one that the developers seem to be using too...

I found Elite when i was a kind and loooooved it. The classical music the docking computer played is something ill never forget, and one of my first memories of gaming euphoria.

I cannot wait to get my hands on Elite:Dangerous....but....im not all that into the extreme early access stuff....so ill just drool at your footage for now.

Someday though......my docking computers will rock again!

I really hope that I can get a job and build a new PC before one of these come out. Space is full of potential. Star Trek and Star Wars introduced the idea of encountering all manner of bizarre alien cultures, opened up the idea of space exploration and combat. Perhaps that's why I like those universes so much. I look forward to leaving the ground again, although I have no idea which of these two I would rather go for.

Elite Dangerous seems to have much better potential for a single player experience. Hence I will prefer it over Star CItizen. I dont care for annoying human players interfering with my game, or to be forced to depend upon other players to have more "fun". I love Elite's treatment of its dynamic universe, and persistent NPCs.

@Orontes13 There is a development team in RSI focused entirely on creating that single player experience with motion captured cinematics, voiced acting and absolutely no interference from other players.

@Sl4cka @Orontes13 I am concerned more about the dynamic world sandbox gameplay.. like X series. Elite seems to be shaping up as a better option on that regard, for solo players.

@Sonic4545 @Yuusha09 Sounds good. Then I will have two games to play. Just that Elite Dangerous has released more info about its dynamics factions and wars, events, multiple levels of NPCs and so on... I will be glad if SC ends up having a solo experience of similar level.

@Orontes13 The single player campaign, Squadron 42, isn't a sandbox game. It's not until you join the PU that it becomes sandbox.

SC has a single player game, like Elite plus a Massive sandbox universe you join after you beat S42, or if you choose to bypass it.

@Orontes13 You can hire NPCs in Star Citizen to crew / gun for your ship so you never have to rely on a human. You can also turn off the PvP slider and only encounter NPCs if you so choose. The economy will also be based on the idea that 75%-ish of the world is NPCs and the player base makes up the final 25% or so. Players can influence but never fully control the entire economy. Star Citizen will give you the option to play solo if you want that. Having said that, I understand your concerns / play-style and hope this helped peak your interest... just a little.

I hope that many people will buy joystick for these games. I can't even imagine using mouse or gamepad.

BTW - good work GS. Keep writing about space-combat sims. Well, maybe except Eddie's news ("Star Citized reached [insert amount of $] milestone").

@Vojtass Why would you rely on such plebian controls? Space sims have always be meant to be played with flightstick and keyboard in much the same way its best to play racing sims with a wheel and pedals. Mice are only good for FPSs.

@sfried @Vojtass Freelancer wasn't too bad with a mouse. TIE-fighter was horrible. Dogfighting was actually physically demanding. I think i broke a mouse playing that. Great game though..

Can't wait for both of these but I've got to admit that I wish there was one that wasn't so open world/multiplayer focused coming out. Used to love playing x-wing and tie fighter where the focus was all on the missions and combat rather than picking up loot or ferrying cargo. Sure I'd still like multiplayer element, i can just imagine how great it would co-oping missions in tie fighter with you're friends as wing men instead of the ai but it would nice to have a game where you felt like part of a military organisation instead of just a random pilot setting out in the galaxy to do stuff.

@moonlightwolf01 Star Citizen will include a full 50+ mission single player/co-op campaign to go along with the open world multiplayer you hear about more in the news. I am with ya on tie fighter and xwing, hopefully they will be able to capture some of that magic with Squadron 42.

@TwoTime69 @moonlightwolf01 I believe the open world system can also be done single player on your own, private server. In fact, I think you have to do that if you want to play a modded game.

@fragsnipa Actually, if some company just made a great Freelancer 2 worthy of the title, I could easily forget all of these newcomers to the genre, especially with all of their dubious boasting about how great their alpha code is and big plans for the future.

Anyhow, I'm definitely in the market for a good space sim, so I guess I'll keep an eye on these two.

I've backed Star Citizen, but Elite is actually looking a lot better from the footage I've seen on Youtube. I love the engine sounds and effects they've put into it.

It also appears to run really smoothly, albeit I haven't seen a stable version of Star Citizen yet. The hanger module for Star Citizen is atrocious. I pray it's zero reflection on the final release.

@Sonic4545 @Spyre1984 wrong. ED has been in actual development for little bit more than a year, since February of 2013. Yeah, they had plans. Yeah, they had theoretical side of PG stuff all laid out. However, they needed to do all code from scratch.

@Spyre1984 They're both at different stages of development - saying one is more polished then the other is completely irrelevant since that is obviously going to change dramatically by the time both are released.

@zerohournow It was a tech demo. The purpose was to show the progress so far of a very early pre-alpha build. It wasn't trying to impress anyone or show off a game.

@Sl4cka @zerohournow Well it did not show much of "progress". I expected more, and better, after more than 2 years and $42m later. So please excuse us for being a little sceptic.

@Spyre1984 "man nappy" hehehe xD good one.

No mate, i was just curious, because like you said "atrocious" just seemed a little too much.

I do agree with you on the sound subject in Elite, and its really looking awesome, which really does tickle my inner nerd lol.

I came about Elite many months after hearing about SC, i never played any Elite games, and the fact that both producers talked in a podcast, made it seem they really have a healthy relation with each other, that alone made me wish the best to both.

So in the end i really hope both succeed for our own enjoyment. Its a win win..win.

@pip3dream @Syphen_bast @Spyre1984 Yeah, atrocious may have been a bit harsh. But to reiterate, it doesn't excite me or tickle my space sim nerdism when I meander around the brokenly animated ship museum.

Now relax your man nappy. I know I know, it's all subject to change. We don't need captain obvious to point that out. You can't go scrutinizing over the game at this point, but I'm less excited about it right now than I am about Elite. Elite's gameplay videos really make me giddy at the knees. Every time I hear that engine throttling up, I feel all happy inside.

Looking forward to both games, but more interested in Elite right now. Thank God we can talk comparatively about future space sim games ey! :D
