I know haters are gonna hate, an this game is still a long way off, but I can't really see why people are loving this announcement trailer, sure it's great that Chris Roberts is coming back to PC, but the trailer itself is a fairly generic video of some spaceships flying about not doing a whole lot, an in it's current state this is NOT in any way pushing the limits of the platform, I'm sure it will look fantastic in two years, but this is just a pre-rendered video trailer, not in game, so stop saying OMG there is frame rate issues with the video cos it requires super computers that aren't available yet! Anyway, hope it turns out great, but I think people are already going overboard cos of the whole 'it's going to test the limits of the platform' thing.
@masteryoung It is all in game engine and is playable. It is not this trailer that has everyone exciting, but rather the 1 hour interview this trailer came from
just when i thought no one could possibly build/design any more kewl spaceships and then YOU COME ALONG! holly jesus...well done...i want this NOW! CONSOLE please!
@Simplythebest12 You dissing anime or something? :P Like anime/manga have been inspiring all kinds of games and such.
And for the record, I've never ever seen a sword in Robotech. I'd rather want a game with Robotech concept than some boring half assed space simulation game tbh, I'd be playing kerbal space project in that case.
Not saying that THIS is an half assed game, but it might just turn out plain old boring. Games need more than just impressive specs and such. They need FLARE.
I'm happy to see a new Chris Roberts game, Wing Commander 1 was one of the first PC games I played and I'm happy to see its creator back in the industry.
I'm also interested to see how much of the old Wing Commander Universe is present in this new IP of his. Given that the Tiger's Claw was a Bengal Class Assault Carrier (love the updated look btw), and the first game took place in the Vega Sector, and there was a system named Kurasawa that was known for its abundant and mineral rich asteroid fields......can only wonder how much is also in there, only time will tell I guess.
But then again, after watching the press conference I get the feeling that there's going to be a ton in this game that Chris Roberts has always wanted to do but couldn't because of the technological limitations at the time. So who cares if he's blending in some of Wing Commander, the new fans won't know the difference and it'll be all the sweeter for the old fans like me :)
Was anyone else having trouble viewing this trailer? I keep trying to restart it but all I keep seeing is my hand throwing cash at the screen while I try to figure out how to use my credit card on the screne...
yay...i have very fond memories of StarLancer, tachyon the fringe and a bit of Freelancer..waiting for this game and by the time this comes out i will have a killer gaming laptop to welcome it :) :)
@Snaptrap It will be more like WC-Privateer.in gameplay. It will not called WC because the story is different and in this game you encounter different aliens
well, battlestar galactica (remake) rip off, anyone? not necessarily a bad thing; whoever I'm supposed to be, I'll still imagine I'm starbuck when I'm killing pirates/cylons... hope the game is as slick as the trailer.
@DeanBFred If anything, BSG stole from the original Wing Commander. Ship battles are basically the same, and so are the ships. The new Cylon Raiders look like Kilrathi fighters. The remade Galactica looks a lot like the original Tiger's Claw.
Finally a game that combines all the best elements of Nexus:the Jupiter Incident, Freelancer, Eve Online and Freespace 2. I only wish they would use the newest UDK engine instead of CryEngine. Love the fact that players will be able to contribute. Take my money!
@Sajuck-Khar They will use a heavy modified version of the newest Cryengine 3 (that Crysis 3 is going to use). It is newer and better engine from the current UDK engine and supports even the latest DX11.1 that have been introduced with Windows 8
@binyv This trailer is based on the Alpha version of the game. The graphics will be completely overhauled along with many gameplay elements that will be introduced in the Beta version
My main problem with space sim. Why do fighters have wings? Unless the fighter is able to land a terrestrial planets there are no need for wings on space fighters.. There's no wind. I wish there were more unique fighters in space sims.
Seconded. Wings and cockpits and big engines in the back all ground this stuff in the high-performance aircraft and huge naval ships we're familiar with.
I agree there could be a place for some radical re-imagining of spacecraft and space combat but WWII dogfights in space are plenty awesome.
@binyv I understand that. But why can't they make super cool fighters that don't look so generic. Crazy, out-of-this-world designs. Especially for alien races, which would have different design principles that Earth would have.
Not to mention cockpits, or a capital ship with huge windows. Bit of a liability in a vacuum, not to mention completely unnecessary. Cameras embedded in the hull could offer up a 360 degree view for pilots and crewmembers, while keeping them behind layers of armor. For that matter the entire idea of manned fighters in space in ridiculous. Sure looks pretty though.
I doubt spaceships would rely on visual contact of any kind. A ship would be very hot - you could pick it up on a multitude of sensors from almost any range. You might be seeing the ship as it was minutes or hours ago depending on your distance, but it would still be detectable.
Engagements, should they ever exist, would likely happen on sensor screens with weapons firing at the speed of light. That could make an interesting game but it wouldn't be very flashy.
@mervynssucks Looks generic to me. I want crazy starships. Alien starships should look nothing like Earth starships. So just from a glance you can tell that's the enemy rather than looking at the radar/sonar/ladar/whatever-they-use-to-locate-stuff-in-space to figure out if it's an enemy or teammate.
Holy Hell a AAA space sim its about F 'in time. Looks like a military sim too which is awesome, I'm weary of every space game trying to be Elite. Did you see that cockpit view? Is that ingame? Goddamn!
Star Citizen Squadron 42 , The Witcher 3 , CDPR Cyberpunk , Alan Wake 2 , Project eternity , SC Heart of the swarms , Wastelands 2 , Company of Heroes 2 , Total war Rome 2 , Star Wars 1313 etc . Keeps getting better .
Great chance of MGS ground zeroes to be on PC as well plus other unannounced titles as well which are in development like Half Life 3 . Glad I didn't own any console .
And anyone who is confused . There is offline single player campaign called as squadron 42 . You can play coop as well and game will use super polished cryengine 3 and will have online features as well with huge galaxy with 50 star systems . The game will support joystick and there will be moments where you will be outside of your ship fighting people in first person view and will be able to hijack enemy ships and they will be able to hijack yours as well .
Graphics are always pretty. I still remember playing Adventure on Atari 2600 thinking that that game was fun but the graphics sucked almost as bad as pong. Space sim fans like depth and complexity. I dont doubt you'll include this, Chris, but I am waiting for the deatils and very hopeful.
