I'm so old, I actually played all of those games at the time (except Still Life). That anyone managed to complete King's Quest is incredible to me (I well recall rage quitting that monstrosity of a game because you could actually insta-die too). Remember there were no internet forums/guides back then to help you out! Gamers sure have it easy these days, that's for sure.

Most Ponit&clicks are hard. I can rarely manage them without checking the walkthrough. Though I stop playing if I do check the walkthrough way too often because it doesn't make sense anymore.

@Johny_47 I am a big fan of Freedom Fighter. Real super game.

How about entire Section Z (edit: the NES version) :p

I got stuck on FEZ a few times for those things that it took the entire community to figure out.

Some honorable mentions goes to: LoLo games, solomons key and zeldas screen scrollers (until you find those wise men how would you know it is five times up :*? )

lol, I remember typing nikstlitslepmur over 100 times back in the 80's. Don't know if I was thinking if I just kept entering it the game would finally accept it lol.

I remember Catherine had some seriously difficult puzzles in it, but at least they were fair.

Anyone who made it through Riven without looking up hints is one brilliant and patient mofo.

@timthegem: I was 10 years old when I played Riven, I didn't even know guides existed. It was my first PC game. I got through it by trial and error. The game was fascinating to me. Then I got Unreal Tournament and played that for years.

@timthegem: I had to look up the golden dome puzzle, because I didn't know I was supposed to push the white button that appeared. I thought it was a light which signaled that I placed the colored balls correctly. I blame the game for not communicating properly that it was in fact a button to be pressed. :-)

I still remember that I used to be able to draw the whole game map from memory, and get through the first island without looking.

That first one's wicked, '- One cup of love, - 1/2 cup of generosity... in a bowl, cream together generosity, sweetness and love to give your man a sweetheart' hahaa very cool =P

Oh yeah, seriously, playing a text based game... it's the 21st century... blinkin' heck, the first one with the recipe was the only interesting one.

This video could have been titled, "Why GameDelay doesn't play puzzle games. Or games with puzzles. Or games that look favorably on puzzles. (Except for Portal, that was worth it.)"

I remember Liesure Suit Larry games and Space Quest games as having some ridiculous ones where it wasn't so much a puzzle as it was something you had to randomly guess or never get right. Sometimes game developers seem to miss the difference between a puzzle forcing you to reason something out and a "puzzle" that's just "enjoy dumb luck or fail." Anyhoo, I remember something with a tornado being stupid in Castlevania II and the code in Space Quest IV being impossible because it was randomly generated every single time. Also, not really a puzzle but Water Temple in Ocarina of Time...yeah, time to pull your hair out.

Yeah, there's a fine line between a hard and a stupid puzzle.

One that I remember fondly is from Riven - the one in the big golden dome, which powers up the small teleportation domes. It was logical, and tied the whole game world together.

If you're after some tricky puzzles in a modern game you should take a look at The Secret World. Their Investigation quests routinely require real-world research (to the point where they embedded a browser in the game for just this purpose). Also, everyone knows how to recognize and translate Morse Code in real time, right?

@bolo_brule: Dude I'll go one better:

I played a C64 game back in the day called The President is Missing that came with a friggin' AUDIO cassette tape that had like 25 minutes of morse code with static over it. Add to this the fact that I was a) persistent and b) 11 years old and you can tell the lost sleep.

(Everything about this comment makes me feel very, very old)

I sort of wish I could go back to the first time I played The Longest Journey. Except that I got distracted by a crab person and almost set fire to my kitchen with a flaming pierogi.

When I solved Silent Hill's piano puzzle, I felt smarter than Einstein. Then the Shakespeare one came along and I felt like a noob.

Puzzles in RE games aren't that hard. Man, the puzzles in Silent Hill games are really crazy.

O.D.T (Or Die Trying) was a Playstation 1 game way back when. It is fun if you like getting frustrated and being tense indefinitely. And solving puzzles :-)

Oh I solved the rubber duckie puzzle on my own but I'm still stuck with the gay policeman, IMO one of the hardest puzzles due to its obscurity was the signpost in Grim Fandango.

@jj2112: I know! I always had to read a guide every time I played Grim Fandango to get past that section. Still one of the best, if not the best adventure game ever made.

@Acheron18: Hmm I'm saying this because I finished Grim Fandango yesterday... And I bought it when it came out all those years ago! I feel that the puzzles became easier after Rubacava and the final sections felt short and rushed. I prefer Day of The Tentacle and Sam & Max.

Hearing those descriptions make my brain hurt. It really is hard to come up with a god puzzle that is also intuitive and logical.

@turtlethetaffer: That's what I love about Portal. The puzzles can always be solved with logic. The Talos Principle was the same even if some of the later puzzles were super hard.

Having said that, I still love the old adventure games as they are what I played growing up.

That would be getting the second ending for Year Walk.

That Shakespeare Puzzle seems very interesting.
