good interview. the background chatter really added to the atmosphere. next time try interviewing at the airport. An earlier article never made mention that there was 2 people that were disturbed by the content, only 1.

OMG. FML. Did Ken Levine actually almost say "...let's face it, there's no way Elizabeth could be the female (insert the word protagonist)...in this story."?! That's a huge friggin' plot spoiler. I think he possibly just ruined the end of the game.

Great interview. Quite enlightening. I am a fan of games with unique and very well thought stories, characters and surroundings and this was very good opportunity to understand the effort behind them.

Ken Levine represents the "professional game developer." Everyone wants to make money, but people like Levine are also more interested in establishing a legacy and giving people something memorable and something they can take with them. The CoD franchise is the antithesis of professional game development.

The religious and nonreligious need not be at odds with one another. It's the anti-religious and anti-nonreligious asshats that cause problems. After seeing that segment of the interview, I'm curious how this game approaches the issue. Ken's apparent attitude doesn't leave me that hopeful...

Noisy as hell. You should consider getting rid of the sounds in the background. So much that I can't be bothered to watch the interview.

"What is the package of an Oreo cookie? ... Right? It is a... a representation of something that is trying to catch your eye and appeal to you. Does it taste like an Oreo cookie? No. Does it feel like an Oreo cookie? Can you eat it? No. Does it have any nutritional value? No."

What the hell is this? That doesn't even make coherent sense. This guy is really reaching.

@WCK619 He's saying that the game and the box art are two completely separate things with entirely different purposes.

The packaging of an Oreo cookie box does absolutely nothing to increase your enjoyment of the actual cookies.

@Scarab83 "Packaging for a snack like Oreo cookies and video game box art are not as different as they may seem, according to Bioshock Infinite creative director Ken Levine." exerpt for the oreo article here. So either you are mistaken or KL is.

@moc5 @Scarab83 @petez34 It's just box art. I doubt many people spend much time looking at it. It's the contents that mater. That said I've seen much nicer covers. this one is really unremarkable.

@Scarab83 @petez34 lol. You won this so called argument a ways back because you are the only one with an argument. Petez34 still has failed to say anything as of yet. Maybe he'll tell us what exactly he's trying to say some day.

@petez34 @Scarab83 To make you buy the product, regardless of its contents.

KL's point was simple, he was frustrated that people were scrutinizing and criticizing their choice of box art as if it actually has a direct impact with the game development itself. His point was that box art, is just that, box art. It needs to sell the game, but has no direct impact on the game itself outside of the number of sales it generates.

So if they put Elizabeth on the back because in the focus groups Booker was a more positive 'buy impulse' people shouldn't try to read too much into it.

@petez34 No, that's the exact opposite of what I'm saying. They both serve the same exact purpose, which has nothing to do with increasing the enjoyment of what's inside the package.

@petez34 @Scarab83 Yes, but only to tell you what's in the box. The picture of the Oreo, or anything else on the package, does nothing to add to your enjoyment of what's inside it. The same goes for video games.

@petez34 @Scarab83 I think you're misinterpreting him or me. What I said and what he said aren't contradictory. Yes, the packaging for Oreos and games serve the same purpose, and neither has anything to do with what's inside, other than to get people to buy them.

@WCK619 Yes, it does. In so many words Levine is asking us to not judge a book by its cover.

The box art was a relatively unimportant afterthought after him helming the development of this game, which he obviously considers his brainchild and is rightfully very proud of.

I can't wait to play this!

@jpf1138 That's wrong. KL wanted to create an image of art that would make a prospective buyer pause and pick up the 'box' and hopefully lead to a sale--he thinks or says. you cant say that KL thinks 'it's a relatively unimportant afterthought' when Irrational conducted focus groups and surveys to vote on it! Therefore, KL is asking people to judge a book by it's cover. Please take your fanboy glasses off.

@petez34 @jpf1138 While it's true some people are as shallow and short sighted as to fall victim to a pretty package, I would think most people are not. I dont think anyone doubts that statistically sales will increase based on the cover art on the box due to the reality that it has been proven time and time again. This just goes to show the Darwinian theory has not caught up to that person that is/was so foolishly swayed as of yet.

Kevin DEFINITELY should see "Old Boy"; it is one of my favorite films of the last decade. Writing, acting, cinematography, etc. Everything about the movie is above and beyond amazing. And it has one of the best fight sequences you can ever hope to see.
Very nice interview. A lot of ground was covered, and it's nice to see an interview go on for so long.

I don't know why Ken was so surprised by the original Bioshock's Success. Sure, the story was more complex than your average shooter, but the gameplay mechanics in the game have been proven time and time again to be very popular, and that's what ultimately sells games On top of that it looked nice, which always helps.

@PernicioEnigma It is probably because the System Shock games were financial disappointments, despite their critical acclaim. In the gaming world, financial success and critical success do not necessarily go hand-in-hand.

@KinoDaKonqueror its not fair to say programmers are the most important part: I believe programmers are just as important as the writers or animators or what-have-you because if you are missing any of these, you would not have a game
