The Evolution Of The PlayStation Controller

A look back at the evolution of the Sony Playstation controller, from the original PS1 system launch back in 1994 to the upcoming PS5 DualSense.

The PlayStation brand has carved out its own identity over the last few decades, in no small part because of the iconic line of PlayStation controllers. From the very start the PlayStation design was influential, having popularized elements like dual shoulder buttons and a handlebar design. But the company has continued to drive trends with elements like vibration, pressure-sensitive buttons, and a touchpad.

Not every experiment was a success, however. The much-derided boomerang controller never even made it to market, and its replacement, the Sixaxis, removed a popular feature. The path of the PlayStation controller has been a rocky one, and we outline all of it in the video above as we look ahead to the PlayStation 5 controller, the DualSense.

Not a fan of non-reusable parts. Nintendo has almost always done this too.

MS controllers work on my laptops, my PCs, my Kindle, and my Android phones. You just click resync or a quick USB-connect, and up & running immediately. Standard headset jack means I can pick up any chat headset or single earbud, or route game audio through it locally.

Commodity parts FTW.

The PS4 controllers sit with the PS4, and serve no other purpose. I'm sure the pad on the top of it does something in some of the great games I've played, but I've never used it.

Not liking the new controller look. As I don't know how it feels yet, it looks awfully like a xbox controller and I don't like that controller at all.

Perhaps they could make the ps4 controller work with it also.....don't think that would be too difficult to integrate.
