I have always been interested in table top RPGs, but there is no way my normal friend group would ever play.

I agree with you Johnny. The rare moments I've had playing tabletop games have been very fun and memorable. It's just unfortunate that I don't have many friends who live nearby who are into that so getting together for a game is quite difficult.

Tabletop games are fine but the modern gaming world is more appealing.

@Wensea10 If sitting in a room alone playing linear progressive stories and not making memories with friends and alcohol sounds more appealing to you, then I suggest that your neck beard is long enough my friend.

great show Johnny, though I've never had the chance to actually play a table top of the likes of D&D, I'd like to see this level of interaction be available in games specially RPG's as I am a fan since I got my first PSONE...

Just like to say that I'm a fan and think your shows are quipped and funny... I hope they give you a raise... (don't forget to buy me drinks when they do) lol

I think that KOTOR, Mass Effect 1, and Dragon Age Origins, with their heavy D&D base, captured much of the fun of uncertainty and bizarre combinations of D&D quite well within their technical limitations. I want to see some of the bigger RPGs go back to D&D frameworks. Those frameworks are fun.

My first character in a friend's campaign "Legend of the Important Things" was a Willy Wonka ninja android made of solid chocolate. He died when I tried to disarm a trap and rolled a natural 1 twice in a row. I found the answer to "What could possibly go wrong?"

Answer: a spiked trap wall dislodges and falls on thee, killing thee instantly.

I replaced him with a medium armored version of Bordlands 2's Ellie wielding a ball and chain. Funniest moment with her: Rolling a natural 20 twice in a row and breaching out of the sea like a whale and landing on the deck of a pirate ship. This after I overshot the pirate ship when firing my ball and chain out of a cannon and holding on.

Yeah they can be boring, but the up times are hilarious and epic!

I got into board games last February when I brought Catan on a road trip and played it for the first time (granted I cornered the people in a hotel room with nothing else to do but to try this new and non-monopoly game that they never heard of, and I only had briefly heard about).

So.... less then 2 years later I have a grand collection of about 60+ board games in a mix of Euro and American board games ranging from Arkham Horror, Cosmic Encounters, Aricola (soon Caverna and Terra Mystica WOOT!) and Twilight Imperium 3 to more gateway games like Tickets to ride, pandemic and Acquire, and just as you said that even though I have a love of video games.. I really love getting a group together and playing board games far far more and interacting with people face to face (or even not using Vassal to play Arkham Horror with my friends that live all over the country)

@Slammer612 Catan was my gateway board game too! It is a fantastic game... FAR better than monopoly or risk, but still a similar type of game. Of course now I have even bigger and better games! Arkham Horror is great fun too. I suggest looking into Betray at House on the Hill as well, it is fantastic fun. Cutthroat Caverns is pretty good too. If you are into card games, Smash Up and Red Dragon Inn are also pretty fantastic (with an emphasis on Smash Up, which has recently become the go to game among my various circles of friends.)

There was a two-part episode of Luther based around these sorts of games. That in itself had me convinced they could be fun. >:-)

I like Johnny, but he gets control of The Point for one week and he's suggesting we not play as many videogames? He's been planning this for a while methinks, just waiting for the Irishman to emigrate west for a window of opportunity. I do not subscribe, dammit! (I have no friends with which to play. :-( )

Some close buds and me have been playing the RISK board game a lot in the last year and we've come up with some really awesome rules for it. We created POWs, Pirates (for people that get killed out of the game early) Each have their own set of rules. We've changed the rules on troop turn ins as a growing multiplier, we introduced dice duels with new 8 sided dice based on specific rules, and even introduced a multiplier 20 sided and 100 sided die.

In all honesty, I love hanging out with close buds and drinking beer but we're so down on our new rules that it makes the game so much more fun and makes the game quicker (and in our opinions more balanced). We have all the rules written down and we've tweaked them pretty close to a full version. We've even introduced new players, let them play by our new rules and they absolutely love the new version.

We even bought 36 of the monopoly piece "Howitzer", bought some metal binding paint colors based on the original game colors and now they each represent 50 armies (our rules and multiplier die allow for a max of 300 army turn-in). At that point, there is even a die to start limiting the max player.

We've got tons of other rules but we've been fine-tuning the game for close to 3 years now and we're close to having it perfect. I'd never go back to playing original RISK.

@Andrendenum1 Risk is definitely a classic, but you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't check out some of the better games out there if you have a reliable group of friends that enjoy this sort of thing.

@Andrendenum1 Hey, Could you possibly share those rules on a google doc or something? My friends and I had a period of playing RISK once a week, but eventually it died down. It sounds like you guys have come up with quite the "mod", and I'd love to try it out!

This panel I saw at an Anime convention by Matt Mercer (voice actor for a bunch of Anime, Games and such) inspired me to give Tabletop games a try, his stories were brilliant, I recommend people watch it, it's pretty funny too :D

Table top RPG's really are fun. It was kinda weird at first, like johnny says speaking in weird voices and stuff, but it really gets you hooked. The first one i've tried was Vampire: The Masquerade. And I've to say that no game ever gave me the hours of fun vampire has. I've tried D&D but I was never a fan of dungeon crawlers and that's really all we did. If you haven't tried it, do. It's fun even if you play online. Though, of course, not nearly as fun as playing in a room with other people. The only upsides are better narration and a bigger and more varied player pool.

@gbus316 Video Games are far more geeky and weird. You sit alone in a room staring at a TV. Tabletop games are a social thing, made even more enjoyable with alcohol. Most of the tabletop sessions I have are with friends, AND their girlfriends.

Used to play D&D a lot about 15 years ago. I like a lot of tabletop games, but since leaving school about a decade ago it has become increasingly difficult not only to find other people interested in playing, but also finding a time when they can gather and sit for an afternoon to play.

Maybe if you lived in a city there may be groups to join to find playing partners, but traveling for hours each leg of the journey to play is a high barrier to entry compared to electronic gaming.

I used to be a D&D player for a couple years with some college art students. Great times, really fond memories. Although I found it uncomfortable that the GM kept making characters who wanted to have sex with my avatar.

I play Magic the Gathering which is sort of table top. Good game.

@Evil_Saluki My group actually has the opposite problem. Any female character our (male) DM plays, a certain other male player tries to hook up with the female NPC with his RP character. It's really awkward every single time.
