Tabletop games: Need a lot more than 1 player.

Computer games: Need only 1 player.

So tabletop games can go to hell.

I feel the same way Johnny. A few years ago I too played my first campaign of Dungeons and Dragons and since then I've bought dozens of board games and still play D&D because of the freedom and social interaction that you can't get unless you are sitting at a table talking to your friends and having a good time. Definitely not for everyone but I can see many people putting aside a night to grab good friends, good beer, and good games and having a smashing good time.

Good episode, Johnneh.

Not bad Johnny, good description and good examples of tabletop. Settlers of Catan is so addictive.

I strongly suggest watching some episodes of TableTop (hosted by Wil Wheaton) on youtube.

You'll get hooked right away.

I like this episode of the point. I played my first tabletop RPG because I had a friends who where trying it out for the first time on impulse. Sure the books were huge and it took some getting used to, but once we had the basic idea, we had a blast. This was not because we were amazing players and we were out to win anything but because it was a flexible game that revolved around talking to people you enjoy hanging out with anyway. It reminded me a lot of the same sensation you get from playing risk or monopoly, you spend hours playing these games mostly because it's a social event usually involving pizza, jokes and swapping stories

I love tabletop RPGS. My friends and I get together at least once a week to play, and it's always a good time.

More and more board games are released each year. Incredible experience absolutely incomparable to video games. Both are great, but both are so different. Definitely worth to check it out. Many people think that board games are old dusty titles like Monopoly or boring like Scrabble. Come on! We have XXI century, there are tons of modern, very interesting board games. Everybody can find something special: economics, tactics, dice driven, cards driven, party games etc. Choice is simply astounding. Even video games developers noticed that. E.g. CD Projekt will release The Witcher adventure board game next year. I will definitely buy it.

I miss tabletop gaming, but I don't know anyone around here that does (kind of a small city). The other thing is, honestly, I'm not a fan of the fantasy setting that most people play. I like it, just not as much as others.

My two favourite tabletop games I've enjoyed were both back in High School: Heroes Unlimited; a superhero RPG by Palladium Books and a home-brewed wrestling RPG that my friends put together.

The latter was a lot of fun because the system treated pro-wrestling (the "fake" WWE stuff) as a legitimate competition. So you'd have rolls for each suplex, pin, and submission. Me and a friend of mine have considered dusting it off, fixing it up to balance the rules better, and put it on the market, but there doesn't seem to be much interest in tabletop gaming these days. Or at least interest in a wrestling one, specifically.

I love tabletop RPGs. I started with D&D back in high school nearly 15 years ago and I've been hooked ever since. As much as I love video games, tabletop RPGs do require that face to face interaction and the experience of a shared narrative is like no other. I wish you luck on your RPG writing adventure, Johnny. I know I'm doing the same, I'm working hard to write and publish an RPG book with the Savage Worlds ruleset (assuming I get publishing rights with Pinnacle Entertainment Group, but I'm confident in my ability and I have some connections). It's a daunting task that's for sure haha. :)

Decided to give DnD a shot about a month ago with a group of mates who had never experienced it either and were a little wary about the whole thing. After our first 2 hour session we were absolutely HOOKED! Now meeting up once or twice a week to continue our adventures. It's not all about Role playing. Hell most of the time it's taking the piss out of each other and having a laugh. Great fun

Hey Johnny, really liked the video and I would really like to play tabletop RPGs with my friends like I did when I was a kid, but the deal is none of them would agree to play with me, since they would find it's simpler to play video games 'cause it's much easier to plan a conference through Skype (not that there's anything wrong with that) but I really miss playing these RPGs with my buddies. what do you think I should or could do Johnny (I'm really serious here)?

@ZEeduardo94 I know that some local shops have things like D&D Encounters where they run pre-made adventures for people of all skill levels to join in and have fun. It's very drop in, drop out and there's no real commitment that you may have with a regular gaming group that's mid campaign. Most gaming shops have boards that have groups that are looking for members or advertise that they're playing so others can join in.

Whatever you have to do give it a shot because it's a lot of fun, a lot of good interaction from role-playing, and well... it's A LOT OF FUN.

@ZEeduardo94 There's definitely a barrier to entry, especially when Skype is involved (my friend joins in our session through Skype nowadays because he's moved to a different city, it's not ideal).

My suggestion would be to ask your friends to humour you for one evening, when you can run a one-sheet session that only takes a couple of hours from start to finish. Oftentimes that's all it takes to get people hooked - some of my colleagues used to poke fun at me for being so excited about tabletop roleplaying, but now they play in a campaign I run for them (just got home from the latest session, actually!)

Failing that you could always look online for local role playing groups, or put something up yourself. It depends where you live, but I know there are quite a few semi-open role playing groups in London - hopefully it's the same elsewhere. I hope that helps!

@SHEETBIKE Well...I live in Brazil and I honestly have never heard of these local role playing groups, not even online, in my life. As far as dice and books about monsters (you know, like Dungeons and Dragons) the stores that sells these kinds of stuff are much more rarer to find compared to when I was a kid.

I could do a RPG story rather easily, since I almost always did the campaigns. It was rather funny, I borrowed ideas from various games that me, my mother and my brother played like "Heroes of Might and Magic" and "Legaia 2"(for the PS2), which is one of the reasons I wanna be a game developer in the future, to make awesome stories and RPG worlds and get creative with game mechanics, like in "Tales of Symphonia".

The only thing that worries me is my friends laughing at me and stuff, saying I'm stupid but....uhm....yeah, I'll give it a shot, thanks. By the way, is that really you Johnny?

@ZEeduardo94 If they're really your friends, they won't laugh (well, they might, but hopefully not too hard). It really is me. Thankfully nobody's found it worth their time to impersonate me on here...

Reminds me of old system link parties with halo in high school. Online multiplayer makes it to easy to set at home and enjoy a screen of your own rather than gathering at a friends house. ..oh Halo parties. Good times.

I've been invited to do some tabletop gaming a few times, but i've always assumed it wasn't for me. I might reconsider; perhaps i'm being rather small-minded about the whole thing.

@shingui5 Table-top gaming has gotten this bad stigma but it's generally by people that have never really even played a pen and paper game.

It's the perfect gaming situation as far as I am concerned. No adventure ever the same and since the popularity of table top gaming has increased there are lots of new people that are looking to see what it is all about. Just head to your local hobby and game shop and see if they do any regular events, here we have a weekly D&D Encounter every Wednesday, where there is no real commitment to having to be there every week, and just give it a try.

At worst, you'll have lost a night of doing something.

At best, you'll find a hobby that's a lot of fun, full of imagination, and different from video games in the best way, in my opinion.

Me and my group of buddies play table top games every Sunday. Whether it be a 10-hour long session of Twilight Imperium 3 or a two-hour campaign of Game of Thrones, you simply can't recreate that feeling of playing with friends.

Tabletop games are meant for the social and everyone should try one at some point in their life.

@meatz666 @airshocker Lol. Because I've got a dedicated group to play TI3? Trust me, playing that game for 10 hours straight is rough. Especially when you have to constantly be aware of treachery from your so called "allies".

Tried it once, couldn't stop laughing at some of the power fantasy and stories on offer. Somebody said they were a dashing rogue and I replied "the only time you would be dashing, is when they hook you to the slede".

Was never invited again because I couldn't take it seriously. Totally worth it.

I see a lot of people talking about how they want to get started in tabletop gaming but don't know anyone. I highly recommend you go to websites like Meetup.com. There are some great resources for finding like minded people. I met a regular tabletop group that way and we have a blast.
