Best RPG, loved 2, the only complaint I have with it is that must have had tw2 worlds broader than tw1. But both the story and gameplay of both Was Great

I highly recommend the books for those who enjoyed the games. There are no spoilers as the books take place in an earlier period of Geralt's life. The games' stories make much more sense after reading some of the books because many of the characters and countries are described there. The first time I played the Witcher II I really felt like I, myself, had amnesia and didn't have the slightest comprehension of the various political struggles.

Awesome! What about Dragon Age: Origin? It does share some similarities imo.

Also, there are so many Witcher books, I don't really know where to start, hardly going to read them all I think.

Never cared for the witcher games. Felt it was a one man show with cussing and sex used as a to shock and impress people. Gameplay wasnt that fun either. Story was so so

If you're looking for another book recommendation I suggest Maurice Druon's The Accursed Kings originally published in French as Les Rois Maudits. They are historical fiction rather than fantasy about the French monarchy after the burning of Knights Templar Grandmaster Jacques de Molay and the curse he purportedly puts on Phillipe IV and his descendants. It's dark, multiple character narrative approach is very similar to Game and Thrones. In fact a new English edition is in bookstores now (not sure if it's a new translation or not) with a foreward by George RR Martin specifically because of the similarities. I'm reading the series in French right now and it is absolutely fantastic. It was written in the 50s so it doesn't have the graphic sex of the Witcher or Game of Thrones (plenty of sexual politics though!) but it does not skimp on the violence.

Great stuff. I really enjoyed Troll Hunter, too. Thought it was pretty ridiculous a lot of the time but it's done really well. Also, I thought the Witcher books were great - just wish they would translate them all, in the correct order this time!

For anyone who hasn't played the first two Witcher games...why? Why have you cheated yourself out of two spectacular games? They are dirt cheap now so just play them already! Thank you for your time.

@RevLux I thought the first one was MASSIVELY over rated. I loved the beginning but when you got into the town, it died for me. So boring. Just bought The Witcher 2 though and will absolutely try that.

@RevLux Indeed, and a lot of people discredit the first game, and just play TW2, but TW1 is really good as well (I may actually prefer the story in TW1), and it'll give you a large appreciation for how far the studio has evolved in just 2 titles. There are a couple graphics mods for TW1 that make it a little easier on the eyes, but all the actual gameplay mechanics are solid.

The First Law trilogy was incredible. I just finished The Blade Itself, and boy is it bloody awesome. I loved the torturer, Glotka. You people need to buy and read 'em!

That First Law Joe Abercrombie trilogy was rather excellent, the torturer might not seem like a character that is central to the books humor, but if you like it black he is, highly recommended read.

Witcher is one of those rare games that once you beat it, you count days for the next installment. This is exactly what happened with me at Witcher 2 ending. I feel that I didnt get the most of it since I've played it on X360.

@fgjnfgh Regardless of the platform you really must play through the Witcher 2 at least twice imho. This way you can experience both of the main factions. The last half to 2/3rds of the game is quite different depending on your choice both in story as well as setting.

Johnny, the witcher books are actually set before the games, the games are the sequels to the book series, in fact the first and 2nd game have already spoiled the ending of the book series.

So you can read them without fearing for spoilers, it's a whole new story.

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen was great, but not very reminiscent of The Witcher, apart from wielding a sword.

Two Worlds had a slightly similar feel to the Witcher but I understand not wanting to recommend it.

@TehUndeadHorror Yeah, I've tried using simple Polish to English translators to read them but it just comes out about as nonsensical as you'd imagine. It really does take a professional translator to do have it make sense as well as stay as true to it's origins as possible.

Why would the books spoil the game since the events in the game happen after the events in the books? Knowing the backstory just means you get more out of the games because you are more familiar with the lore and characters and are able to recognize the references to the books..

Or you can always do some tabletop role-playing with your mates, that will suck you in some medieval fantasy worlds.

@DrvoJavorovo CD Projekt RED will release The Witcher Adventure (board) Game before TW3 premiere. It will be designed by Ignacy Trzewiczek, one of the best Polish RPG/board game makers. I bought his last co-op game, Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island. Really though, exciting gameplay - highest replayability level I've ever seen in this genre. WAG will be lighter, but still worth attention - designer is a die-hard fan of the witcher universe since 1992.

@DrvoJavorovo @Vojtass There was The Witcher RPG: Game of Imagination (in Polish: Wiedźmin: Gra Wyobraźni). There was also non-collectible card game released in Poland just before TW1, but it wasn't a success. The Witcher Adventure Game will be the first board game set in this universe.

I recommend the Malazan Book Of The Fallen series. Epic medieval high fantasy. Other series' take place over a continent. This one over a whole planet. 10 books. Swords, cussers and magic. You guys will love it.

@footballFanSan Get into Brent Weeks and Brandon Sanderson as well! The Black Prism was one of the best books I'd read last year.

I'd say Glen Cook's The Black Company is tonally similar to the Witcher, subverting many high fantasy tropes.

Is it dirty and filthy of me to want the witcher 3 to not be that holy grail of RPG gaming everyone is saying it will be? I'm just annoyed by all the people talking about the game as if it's the second coming of jesus.

Yeah, it's crappy to wish for a game to be a let down.....

@Kreol1q1q It is crappy to think that. But I'd be more offended if I didn't know how wrong you are going to be.

Besides Geralt also rose from the dead and he is more bad ass than Jesus could ever be.....if either of them existed that is.
