The Witcher 3 Vs. Zelda: Breath Of The Wild | Versus

We pit two classic open world adventures against each other. Fighting for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is Dave Jewitt and repping The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is Will Potter. But which game comes out on top? Watch and decide who you think argued their case better in our poll! New episodes of Versus every Wednesday!

From Far Cry 5's fictional Montana setting to Sea of Thieves' stormy waters and everything in between, open-world games are everywhere these days. They allow players to feel free, to have agency in their worlds, and to mess about to their hearts' content. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild contain two of the greatest worlds of this generation so far, in addition to deep RPG mechanics and memorable quests. The question is: which game is better?

We sat down to talk about both games and which one we prefer. Watch the video above to see a lighthearted and passionate debate between Dave Jewitt, who has made it his life ambition to grow a beard as impressive as Geralt's, and Will Potter, who frequently gets distracted from work by pictures of Link. Get back to work, Will.

The discussion begins with randomly selected topics, and the pair argue in support of their respective games. Alongside the serious analysis of each side, there's also some friendly fun-making and jokes at each other's expense. Be sure to watch till the end to see the quick-fire round, which gets a little goofy.

Last week we put God of War up against The Last of Us to decide which of the two games is the best PlayStation 4 exclusive; Tamoor fought valiantly for God of War to defeat Oscar for the first time. Make sure to make your voice heard this week by voting for who you think won the debate on YouTube or by commenting down below. Check back next week for another episode of Versus; new episodes drop every Wednesday at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM BST / 11 PM AET on GameSpot.com and YouTube.

Witcher 3 has some great (if not best-in-genre) side-stories to tell, but damn, it's pretty mediocre as a game. It would've worked much better as a novel I think. There was too much slogging through the shallow, , non-interactive, restricted and monotonous gameplay (and those are deadly sins in an open world game in my opinion) to make it worthwhile for me.

If i had spend a year on an Island and take just one of those two games with me, It'd definitely be Zelda BotW. It's just a much better game and not just a sightseeing simulator through a book franchises world.

Witcher looks pretty dated now. BOTW has it's own Nintendo/Anime thing going on and it works. My biggest issue was the emphasis on the 120 shrines. 70 was too much never mind 120!!! The game needed more side missions like GTA and more boss battles like Horizon Zero Dawn. I played Witcher after Assassins Creed Origins and it felt really dated and clumsy which is unfair as its an older game. Regardless LOZ still has the best action figures http://nova-store.co/product/legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild-action-figure/ I've yet to see any Witcher toys that are worth getting to be honest. Witcher is not a franchise I'm excited about RDR2 now theres a game I could lose 6 months to!

The reason you explore in TW3 is because someone told you too, or you have to for some quest. In BOTW, you explore because of wonder and curiosity, because you saw something and you wanted to go there. BOTW doesn't feed a story to you. In BOTW, you're not playing as Link, you are Link. You make your own decisions, the game doesn't make them for you.

Its clearly BOTW for me.

man... Witcher 3 is a great game that I've spent a ton of time and money (for new PC) on... but I loved BotW so much that I decided it's going to be my desert island game. So once again, I'm torn.

Everything they have said in the videos are the reasons I love about both of these games. But Witcher 3 still feels like a video games that it's confined within the certain video games rules and logic. BotW also have the game's rules and logic, but it's more align with the real world logic (and physics) so you already kinda know what you can and can't do within the first hour of playing without the game actually lay it down for you.

So I guess if I have to choose, it's going to have to be BotW for the cheer sense of wonder.

Zelda is a better game to play through overall i'd say, but Witcher 3 definitely has superior story telling.

As someone who's played both, I think gameplay wise BotW is superior to the Witcher 3 when it comes to gameplay. Story and plot the Witcher 3 is superior.

Loved them both but seeing as how I've gone through W3 twice now and only once through BotW The Witcher wins this one out for me.

The Witcher 3, by a lot. Zelda was alright, but I played it unlike most that loved it, where it was just another checklist game to me. The best part of Breath of the Wild to me was just helping build Tarrey Town honestly. It had short but sweet character moments. I liked the game, but it was pretty disappointing to me. The Witcher 3, on the other hand, is simply one of, if not my favorite open world game to date. It was the game that kept on giving to me where you discover a lot in a beautiful world with layers of interesting stories to tell.

I could certainly nitpick, but nothing added up to make it less than superb to me. Zelda was a game I felt I didn't really need to spend all that time in as the shrines, and from what I hear, especially the korok seeds, aren't worth the effort and the monotony. The Witcher 3 I didn't regret one moment of spending my time experiencing. I think I spent around 150 hours in Zelda, but in The Witcher 3, that was almost 400 hours, if not more.

At least to me, in terms of what I want to experience, The Witcher 3 excels far past Zelda. I think what Zelda does for some though, didn't quite do it for me. I think you can definitely argue that Zelda is a better, more entertaining game, but that said with the categories in this video, like the story, world, and what have you, The Witcher 3 is so much better.

@NTM23: But once again, The Witcher 3 is not a great open world game. It is a great Bioware style game. The problem with TW3's gameplay is that its shallow and the world, while pretty, is just window dressing. Its the storytelling that powers it. Hell, Fallout New Vegas is a better open world game than TW3.

All TW3 open world design is really is following ? to get loot, thats it, while following map markers for quests. BOTW is once again, a game where you create your own story. It doesn't feed it to you. It doesn't spoon feed you solutions and map markers either. Nevermind the fact that there are multiple solutions to most problems while TW3 railroads outside of story decisions.

TW3 is about going from map marker to map marker, and experiencing the story. Its not really an open world exploration game. BOTW is. The fact is that BOTW is by far the more superior open world game, although TW3 is by far the better story game. Its time to face facts.

Witcher 3: reguarded by many as the greatest video game of all time vs shrine simulator. I'm sorry, but Witcher 3 has an organic world with a believable world, everything feels perfect in it's spot, and feels natural. The soundtrack while riding roach down the trails of velen was amazing, while killing griffons, and wyvern. There is nothing like witcher 3, and the only game that can top it is cyberpunk 2077. The game set the bar for gaming. Breath of the wild had nostalgia.... This is what's wrong with the argument people think because nintendo makes something it's automatically good, but if you stripped the title for breath of the wild then no one would care, and call it boring. Put some different name on witcher 3 and people would still love it. That's the beauty of that game, and the only thing zelda has for it is "the legend of zelda"

@skeletoncross: Wow, such misinformation.

It is BOTW's world that is more organic because the player can act on the environment and the environment impacts him. TW3 on the other hand has a static environment where your actions do not impact it. The open world in TW3 only exists to tell a story, BOTW's open world is the game itself.

TW3 is basically a Bioware title with a pretty but not very interactive open world. BOTW is an immersive sim that advances gaming in general.

TW3 is great, but do not act like its superior to BOTW in world design.

@texasgoldrush: you’re fanboying too hard Niven try though. The fact is witcher 3 is better and botw isn’t. Honestly I don’t care that you can move rocks and pick your nose at the same time. It doesn’t effect me getting from point a to point b. While you look at flies and glide around the map collecting flowers for some Gerudo lady i’ll Be killing monsters that turn out to be regular people during the day. Every quest branches out into 8 different options with 8 equally as good paths botw gives you fetch quests and random stuff that doesn’t effect my progress.

@skeletoncross: Once again, The Witcher 3 is guided. It only uses the open world to tell a story. BOTW has hands down far better gameplay, far better combat, and even does buff crafting better than TW3. You are the one that is fanboying. TW3 wins in storytelling and questing as well as technical graphics, BOTW wins in overall gameplay.

@texasgoldrush: To me, a place is about what you see and how it affects you. Breath of the Wild may have been more interactive, but it wasn't nearly as interesting to explore compared to the locations in The Witcher 3 to me. Plus, just because you can interact with the environment to go about obstacles differently, there was never really a time in which it gave the player incentive to do it.

So yeah, while you have a choice to do this or that to reach a goal, or attack an enemy, it never felt necessary, where more often than not the quickest way is just to do the same thing you've been doing. There was only one moment that made you have to change it up, and that was Eventide Island. I wasn't personally impressed with that place either and was yet again struck with the arduous task of doing the same thing over and over in that one area despite it being a self-contained moment.

There was a little more of that in the DLC, and I was excited to play Zelda's DLC, but goodness I quit it fast as it's not what I was hoping for. To me, Zelda was an overall, heavily repetitive game which is its biggest issue to me. It deals with a lot of climbing and searching for shrines, shrines that have different layouts, but the same look. The puzzles in the shrines also just felt like chores in my opinion.

@texasgoldrush: lol alright whatever you say. BOTW is mostly cookie cutter graphics for every area in the game. At first it looks ok until you see how much of it just repeats. The enemy encounters are fun at first due to their antics but even that becomes stale after a while. Not blaming the devs there isn't much you can do with the limited resources on the Switch though but trying to compare it to the Mighty Witcher 3 is just an insult in the highest order.

The only game that has a chance of being better is their own game Cyberpunk 2077.

@deviltaz35: And The Witcher 3 doesn't repeat in gameplay? Face facts here, the story, graphics, and sound design of TW3 are excellent, but the gameplay isn't. Its not a great open world game as the open world is only really there to have a story in, and the combat lacks real strategy outside of potions. BOTW on the other hand has its open world tie into the gameplay, where situations can be solved multiple ways, and where you have to pay attention in combat. Its gameplay is far superior and only a Witcher fanboy can't see that.

@skeletoncross: Someone who has a different opinion than you isn’t delusional. Why can’t you just be respectful of other people’s opinions without acting like some kind of elitist? We get it, you don’t like Zelda. If you think everyone’s opinion has to match yours, then that’s delusional.

Witcher wouldn't exist without Zelda. BotW changed the open world game, Witcher 3 tries too hard to be a movie it really only impresses teenagers. Zelda is top-tier gaming, Witcher 3 was flavor of the month for hype beasts. Not even close - Zelda wins. Time will prove it.

@schiff11: Did you even play The Witcher? I had to play the Witcher 2 twice because I couldn't grasp the complex political story going on. It's the most mature game series I've played to date and you're saying it's for teenagers? Ironic because BotW has an art style that naturally calls out to the younger crowd.

Dude, you might be retarded.

@Rushaoz: "naturally calls out to the younger crowd" - You mean an art style that will actually hold up a decade from now? Witcher games all look like shit, even Witcher 3 will years from now. You're just so insecure you see brighter colors and feel uncomfortable. Grow up.

@schiff11: sorry lack of AA with no advanced options stuck on a console that can’t push past 1080p. While the Witcher 3 is on PC with features that future proof the game. Yeah witcher 3 will hold up for 20 years while they will have to remaster zelda Lololololol
