What Sets Mortal Kombat 11 Apart, For Better Or Worse

We chat about our time with Mortal Kombat 11 so far, and how this fighting game stacks against other titles in the genre. Mortal Kombat 11 is available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

We've been playing a lot of Mortal Kombat 11, so we gathered around to talk about how we think it stacks against other fighting games and what makes it unique. In the video above, we cover the fighting mechanics, story mode, visual flair, unlocking content in the Krypt, and microtransactions.

Overall, we're having a great time with the game, especially with how impactful the fighting feels. It's been a smooth experience getting involved in the competitive aspect of Mortal Kombat 11 due to robust tutorials (an extension of the detailed tutorials from Injustice 2). Players from all skill levels can get acquainted with the more specific fighting game terminology, learn all sorts of high-level strategies, and put it into practice. And the story mode is an absolute treat for long-time fans and newcomers alike with its fun, cinematic approach and cast of colorful characters.

While the Krypt has been a welcome addition thanks to all the callbacks and references to Mortal Kombat's past, the system to unlock the game's wide range of extra content (gear, kosmetics, Brutalities, kard flair, and more) currently moves at a snail's pace. The ever-changing Towers Of Time have also proved to be more frustrating than enjoyable so far; the premise of modifiers that drastically change the structure of fights sounds like a good idea, but some difficulty spikes makes many fights near impossible. However, NetherRealm has stated that its in the process of making changes to both areas of the game.

There's a whole bunch more to NetherRealm's latest fighting game; you should check out our Fatalities compilation, roundup of savage Fatal Blows and Brutalities. The game is bursting with nods to its past, so look through the collection of Mortal Kombat 11 Easter eggs and references we've found so far. For a more detailed breakdown of the game, be sure to read our a Mortal Kombat 11 review-in-progress.

This is the best conversation I've heard about the game. It seems very fair and down-to-Earth. Don't listen to the raging fanboys who treat the franchise like NetherRealm Studios can do no wrong.

Edit: I also was alive well before the original game released and I agree with the points made here.

If I hear that guy say "chunkiness" one more time I'm gonna punch him in his beta-male millenial dick! If you wanna play panzy-ass anime fighters then go play them. This game is nothing like them, at all. Get a real reviewer, unbiased, and possibly old enough to have been alive when Mortal Kombat was originally released to get a real synopsis of the progress this version has made as compared to others over the years.
