Xbox Makes HUGE Moves | Generation Next

This week has been huge for Xbox. The Generation Next team break down the landmark deal with Bethesda and the implications for PS5 exclusives. They also discuss Series X|S pre-orders and are joined by a VERY special guest.

It's been an absolutely huge week for Xbox. Opening preorders up for Xbox Series X and Series S alone would have been a momentous occasion for the company, but ahead of doing that it dropped a bombshell: Xbox has acquired ZeniMax Media. The purchase includes Bethesda, and properties such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Dishonored, and Wolfenstein, among others.

In this episode of Generation Next, Lucy, Jordan, and Tamoor talk about the implications of Xbox's acquisition, what it means for PlayStation 5 exclusives that the company was working on, and the impact it could have on Game Pass. They also look at what Microsoft CEO Satya Nadela has said previously and discuss whether Xbox could make further acquisitions.

Of course, the crew also cover Xbox's preorder process which, while not as disastrous as PlayStation's, still was much rougher than most people would have liked. Retailers struggled to meet demands and, in some cases, outright didn't make preorders for the Series X and S available at the time prescribed by Microsoft. Were Lucy, Jordan, and Tamoor able to get one? Watch and find out.

Generation Next is GameSpot's dedicated show that's all about the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Each week we'll be digging deeper into the biggest news stories, as well as talking to the developers that are charting the future of gaming. You can catch up on previous episodes here.

The huge move would be to manufacture more consoles first and foremost.

Phil Spencer is finally coming close to eliminating part of the tremendous damage done by Don Mattrick.

LOL! They paid $7.5 BILLION! That's Billion with a B. The entire Star Wars franchise, the most influential Hollywood property in history only went for $4 Billion.

And for what? Elder Scrolls Skyrim? Wasn't that released in like 2010? Look at all the pictures accompanying these news segments. All pictures of low res knights in plate mail from the cover of an Xbox 360 game.

I am not a Sony fanboy. I have both current gen consoles, and have always bought both. But even I can see that Sony puts out FAR better games then MS, and more frequently. Its not even close.

You can also guarantee that GamePass is now going to cost $20/month, not $10. On top of that, ES6 will be on GamePass for sure....for an extra $30 (See Mulan).

@hsnberg: yeah that's not accurate. Mulan was supposed to be released to theatres a s in order to recoup money to made it straight to digital just like other movies which didn't get to go-to the theatre, they were renting it for a fee, not comparitive at all.

@hsnberg: You're acting foolish. By buying Zenimax they got multiple game studios that can start pumping out games for game pass which don't need to be given royalties. Add the LOVED franchises like ES, Doom and Fallout... That's definitely worth the 7.500.000.000 (with a B...). Game pass has 15.000.000 (that's one comma less then the one with a B) subscribers and rising. 10 dollars a month with 15.000.000 subscribers? You do the math.

@bamabam: My point wasn't that they can't afford it. I suppose if you are rich, you can buy whatever you want.

My point is that Zenimax isn't worth it. Even what they have done so far does not warrant 7.5 billion, and on top of that, I predict that the subscription business model will take away any incentive to make good games in the future. Why should they?

Secondly, if you think that MS is just going to give everything away for $10 a month, and that they are not going to try to get back some of the money from buying all these studios, as well as making the Xbox at a loss, then you are DREAMING!

OF COURSE they will say that now. They are trying to get you to buy the new Xbox and build some hype. But mark my words, when Starfield or whatever it is comes out, they WILL charge extra for it. $10 is just the entry fee to get you into the ecosystem. You'll also need a very high speed internet access to stream games of 4k quality, so add in the monthly cost of your 50 MPS internet service.

@hsnberg: no matter how you look at it, $100 for one game in one region is towards another... Buying games in Japan is much more expensive then America, import tax, duties tax, cost of game tax.

Same as new Zealand, same as australia, same as Brazil, same as philipines, same as Mexico...

Sorry I'll keep the topic only within your region

XBOX series X/S sold out in Japan. If XBOX series X/S series does well in Japan PS5 might not do so well, Nintendo with the Switch doing so well may also disrupt PS5.

@draziczach: Samsung and LG are big contenders in electronics and appliances.

Switch is doing great.

XBOX series is off to a good start.

Sony has not been dominating for a very long time.

PlayStation making up a sizable sum of the revenue for a big company like Sony is not a good thing.

Sony’s best move would be to start up multiple first party studios and blast the hell out of Phil Spencer’s o-ring with unbelievable new exclusive IP. Innovation has always been Sony’s strength. It’s well past time we started to see that again.

It’s seems like all Phil has in his arsenal is to open his corporate wallet to buy other people’s innovation and then pretend he actually did something.

The best part of these corporate buyouts is when the employees start to realize they’re being paid less and are expected to do 50% more work and the best talent starts quitting. Corporate growth expectations do it every time.

@jsprunk: As long as good quality games come, there's no reason to undercut...

And Phil can be direct with consumers that game pass may go up 1$ to help fund great games...

Better then being thrown a $70 to $130 game and have micro transactions in it.

For me as a PC Gamer, Microsoft just made no reason for me to buy one.... which is great for me. I want a PS4 for Demon Souls, but I’m not paying £450 and £70 to do it.

Sony should buy a Japanese gaming company like Square Enix or Capcom and give into the the biggest d*ck measuring contest this industry has ever seen. xD

After this news the Series X/S is selling out even in Japan, in a place where not even the Xbox 360 sold enough to justify support.

Over 20 Studios with incoming projects!!

Congrats Team Xbox!
