On the fence about buying this game, I came here hoping that this video might convince me to give it a try. Not a chance! Cheers Peter and Jacob, you guys just saved me $60!

@JusticeCovert: I bit, but as usual when I impulse buy (digital version, no less, so can't return it), I have been playing other games much more. You have almost every Switch game released, so I could have told you that you shouldn't buy a 100+ hour JRPG to add to the list, lol. You couldn't have time to play them all, yet...

The main problem with Xenoblade 2 is that they really did not do an overhaul on the combat system. I am enjoying this game by all means, but the system is worse than the first xenoblade and the repetitive comments by the enemies is just horrible, for one fight they say the same 10 things over and over. Horrible....

@phili878: I think combat is still okay. The bad problem for me is the lack of polish, the huge decrease in quality in handheld mode, and the atrocious voice acting in English.

@phili878: repetitive comments combined with some of the worst dubbing I've ever heard

Oh dear, somebody forgot to do their homework.

The combat is like this since Xenoblade I. At first it seems like total Star Ocean scream and button bash crap, until you understand the deeper layer of the combat.

It's somehow a bit harder then Xenoblade I, but nonetheless deep, varied and brutal.

You guys want Dynasty Warriors in a Xeno blade? Kids shouldn't play this series.

@Jelster79: no, i think people just wanted a game that was "fun" to play and were hoping the battle system would be an improvement over the previous chronicles games. monolith soft hasn't made a good battle system since xenosaga.

@Xristophoros:

Xenoblade 1 has a fun combat system. If this system is anything like that I will have fun with it.

I have to say that so far I'm really disappointed by this game. The idea that you auto attack and then push one of three buttons when they build up just feels like pure garbage. Then you toss on the most trite writing I've ever seen in a game. Yuck.

Makes me wonder if the writing is decent and is just lost in translation, or if Japanese people are really just addicted to a very one dimensional style of entertainment.

It's a shame because the world building is phenomenal, and the art is beautiful. At this stage in video game development you have so many examples of fun, intuitive combat that it's just a real waste of a great concept to tie it down with a button mashing pile of crap like this.

@wunshot: interesting seeing so much negativity in the comments here... whereas the review page was filled with blind nintendo fanboys everywhere who were defending this game to the death. it is nice to know that there are people who are more objective and can see the game for what it really is -- pretty good, but with many faults.

@Xristophoros: I literally just created this account to try to counterbalance some of that fanboy positivity. Those unbalanced reviews caused me to waste $60....

This game could have been so much fun with some bloodborne style combat. Or even Zelda combat. Anything but this...

@wunshot: did you not bother to look at Xenoblade Chronicles 1 before buying it? You obviously didn't play the original if you're that disappointed in this one. I enjoy more active battle systems, or turn based rpgs, but I knew what I was getting with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in that department.

@twztid13: nope. I just looked at the graphics and the overly inflated meta critic scores. Same thing happened to me with persona 5. My fault for expecting such highly scored games to have legitimate combat systems. But in the words of immortal technique, "If you go platinum, its got nothing to do with luck, it just means that a million people are stupid as ****"

@wunshot: you didn't like persona 5? If not, you should probably stay away from JRPGs, altogether, IMHO.

Also, to be fair, you not putting forth the effort to make sure a product would satisfy you with all of the media available nowadays, isn't really something that "happens to you." Not trying to be disrespectful, as I have had the same feelings many times when there weren't so many media options available, & I was pissed at publications that seemed to pad scores. I learned the hard way that I can't ways trust these companies, but especially now that companies pay them above the board for advertising which can't always can't be distinguished from normal content, I make certain I get multiple sources, and view gameplay before making a decision, or know that I may be disappointed & wasting money. After getting to know people that worked as gaming journalists, & learning how the review process went, I don't think the reviews were paid off, but it's still not at the level I thought it was when I used them to make purchases (& in the past few years, it's much worse than the prior decade when I depended on them to save money buying games I wouldn't like).

The system is extremely converluded... And they basically just dump it on you. And the other game mechanics are not any better. They all complicated for no reason, and suck the fun out of playing.

Also, this game has some of the dumbest fetch side quest ever. Go pull randomized points on the map till you gey 7 Ivy... Or pay some extraordinary amount. oh, but lets link it to a semi auto blade progression system. But wait, lets make one tied to the most idiotic retro trash game we can think of.

You know that when you need to do guides on how to attack, your combat is flawed. Not even the game has a guide to help (after the initial prompt).

I feel like a Dynasty Warriors style combat would have been better. Probably would have even bought a Switch just for this game if it did, especially with Kos-Mos in it but the fighting just turns me off too much (voices too, unless you can change them to japanese).

@Lord_Sesshy: you can press a couple d-pad directions that have controls but no guide. Also, the Japanese voice pack takes over 1gb I think, & is equally bad. That's something I know they won't patch, so that sucks. I knew what the combat would be like, so not as big of a detractor for me.

@Lord_Sesshy: You can "switch" between english and japanese if you download the free update. As to the combat, this has been an issue since the very first game.

Both X and Xenoblade 1 have a lackluster sense of combat. The writing can be great and the world building is next level, but damn the monotony of combat.

@Lord_Sesshy: agreed. this game looks like a lot of "work" and does not look like "fun" to play. it is plain to see that the battle system is a mess -- all you have to do is take a look at the ui to know this. it's as though the designers weren't sure what they wanted to do with it and just threw in a bunch of obtuse systems and hoped one would stick. they should hire a new battle system designer for the next monolith soft game because the entire chronicles series suffers from poorly designed, frankenstein battle systems that are too heavily based on the convoluted systems found in cheap mmo's.
