Review: Viewtiful Joe

Viewtiful Joe was one of 5 games that were supposed to be Nintendo Gamecube exclusive, along with P.N. 03, Resident Evil 4, Killer 7 and another game that is now dead in the water, but you can now find 3 of those 4 games (including Viewtiful Joe) on the PS2 as well

Story:
Meet Joe your ordinary average geek. Joe has a Girlfriend named Sylvia whom loves Joe and loves going to the movies with Joe. One day at the movies the villain of the movie not only defeats the hero of the film, but kidnaps Silvia from the theater. Now it is up to Joe to not only save Silvia but discover the super hero in him, by learning the moves of the fallen hero to help save her.

Graphics:
The look is vintage 2d Side Scrolling, mixed with 3d imaging and cell shaded to add to the super hero theme suggested by the story, each character has its own look and unique abilities, each power has its own look and is completely unique to this game, from the super speed, to the super slow-motion you feel like you are living the take like you would in a action movie.

Music:
Viewtiful Joe is a game that has good music, sound, and voice acting. If I have any gripes I felt that there could have been a little more variety in the music, but it is not really noticeable, and can be chalked up to my being picky again.

Control:
Control is easy to pick up and learn and plays like you would expect a beat em' up platform to play like, you have you typical jump, punch and kick buttons, and each special power has its own buttons.

Game play: This game is tough, like Contra tough, like Devil May Cry 3, Ninja Gaiden Tough, but for some reason is addictive and compelling, despite the rough time dealt to you by the games many bosses. And the extras like playing as Silvia, Captain Blue, or Dante from Devil May Cry (only in the PS2 version) keep you coming back for more.

Design:
This has to be one of the most well thought out, and best designed games I have played in recent years, every little detail was thought of and accounted for buy the crew at CAPCOM. As I see it the polish on Viewtiful Joe might be visible from space which is a show of how impressed I am with this game.

If you have either a PS2 or a Gamecube you owe it to your self to play this game, and at $20, why not buy it. I strongly doubt you will regret it, especially if you love a little challenge in your games.
