Where it all started for me :)
We networked computers together and played this game one vs one for hours on end. Despite the fact that the game had horrible graphics, I honestly think that the Atari 2600 was enviable compared to this, it was so much fun it didn't matter. I do have to admit that the game was not well balanced at all for 1 vs 1 combat though. The human mages were far more powerful than their Orc counterparts simply because they had the ability to summon elementals and cast invisibility on them.
This combination essentially allowed you to pummel the opposing force before they could even begin to attack you. Althought it was unfair, it certainly was a heck of a lot of fun.
Outside the limited one vs one multi player aspect, the single player game was the first strategy game I ever really played. It showed me the basics of how to build an army as well as to engage in combat between the two races. Though I can't say this was terribly difficult, it was a heck of a lot of fun to have a few small campaigns to play though in these days.
All in all this game was simply a blast.
