Another Quiz game hits the Wii, but is this one actually any good?

Who Wants to be a Millionaire? is a Quiz game based on the popular ITV show of the same name. The basic premise of the game is to answer 15 increasingly difficult questions (yes, the game is out of date. The show's format changed to 12 questions five months before the game's release) in order to win £1 million.

Let me start by saying this. Who Wants to be a Millionaire? isn't a bad game as such, it simply isn't good though. It follows the idea of the show fairly well, although there are a few key things missing that make this game a little pointless.

For starters, there's no leaderboard to boast to your mates about your "millionaire" status. An online leaderboard may be asking too much for a Wii game, but even the PS1 version eight years ago had an offline leaderboard.

There's no voices when you select the "Phone a Friend" lifeline, merely a "I think it's B" line of text and the four "friends" you have to choose from rarely list the subject of the question you're being asked as one of their specialities. Even being able to choose four friends before you start would be an improvement.

The questions themselves however are generally quite good. There seems to be a pretty big database of them and I've only very occasionally had them repeat on me. The difficulty of the questions are just about right as well. But don't think they're perfect. One question that sticks out to me asked about a mythological creature that is "...part-Eagle, part what?" with one of the answers being "Eagle"

It may sound harsh to be critical of these things, especially when you consider this is obviously aimed toward the casual market. But when you also consider this isn't exactly what you'd call a budget game, you can see why.

You'd be far better off popping down the pub, taking a few pound coins and playing on one of those touch screen versions that are seemingly in every pub in the land (except my local, but it seems to be stuck in the 1980's.)

If you really really have to play this game, I suggest you do nothing more than rent it for a few days, get some friends round and laugh at each others stupidity.
