A very promising srpg with a major drawback unfortunately...
Pros:
1) Interesting job systems.
2) Long gameplay for a psp game.
3) Interesting characters and story line.
4) Refreshing srpg ideas.
5) Game gets addictive as you progresses deeper and get familiarize with the game mechanics.
Cons (Very important for everyone to read):
1) Beginner unfriendly
I'm totally shocked at how difficult this game is from the very start not because of the game mechanics, but because the game does a very poor job at teaching you what to do. This is the first time I've came across a srpg where at the 2nd stage I'm totally stumped and restarted 5 times. Throughout the missions I've done trial and errors in frustration in order to find the correct strategy to beat it.
2) Wrong job approach
I've played FF:T and Jean D'arc. Both lets you customize your character jobs to your liking and each specialises on a very good job you would like them to have. However, this game forces you to literally change your job classes frequently according to various missions. And each time you change, you have to re-equip everything again although there is a fast option. In addition to the uncertain mission scoops with poor instructions, you can't help but slam your psp in fustration. In this sense, I don't feel any development in any of my characters.
3) Wall of text with little voice dialogue
With psp's large umd space, you'd have expected most of the dialogues to get voice overs but instead they force you to read through a wall of text most of the time. In addition to that, the cutscenes are non-animated, just pictures with voice overs. If they would follow Jean D'arc's style, I would have a better story experience and character development. If you like reading, ignore this.
Verdict:
Overall, this game is fun and pretty hardcore for people with little patience in retrying missions. The job system is good but the game mechanics forces you to be a jack of all trade hindering good character development and maximum player experience. In addition to all that, the poor instructions given during missions adds to the already frustrating job changing system. You can only summarise the missions in 3 words: Trial and Error, which is an indication of a poorly implemented system. Give this game a rent first before buying it. You may love it or hate it.
