Fun, intuitive, underrated shooter.

User Rating: 8.2 | Operation WinBack N64
WinBack: Covert Operation is really one-of-a-kind for the Nintendo 64. The only other games I can think to compare it to would be the Metal Gear franchise, but that may be a bit unfair, and inaccurate. WinBack is a tactical shooter, putting you in control of a anti-terrorism operative charged with rescuing his team and bringing down the terrorist organization known as the "Crying Lions."

The control in Winback is very good. Your character is easy to move, can perform maneuvers such as rolling and you will seldom have camera issues (praise the Lord!). One of the most notable features is your character's ability to hide behind boxes and walls, behind which you can take cover and from which you can pop out and fire at your enemies. The auto-targeting function also works very well.

The AI, however, is pretty lousy. You will be able to slice through most of the terrorists like a hot knife through butter, mostly because the butter is pretty friggin' stupid. Add a pistol with unlimited ammo to that list and you're basically RoboCop (except you can't get hit as much, and you don't eat baby food).

At any rate, WinBack: Covert Operations is a fun game with intuitive controls and a clever combat system, and even a decent storyline. My guess as to why it got such a lame score: N64 owners expected a Metal Gear-like game for the Nintendo, and when they didn't get it, they threw a hissy fit. But, I could be wrong. It's happened before, once or twice.
