An alternative entry in the Wing Commander Universe.

Wing Commander Armada is an ambitious stab at the strategy genre, a departure from the usual space sim model that the franchise is famous for. Unfortunately it is a somewhat so-so venture that garners mixed reactions.

The strategy aspect of WCA is fairly easy to get into and quite shallow. Randomly generatable maps add a little to the replay value, but for the most part it is lurk, build up, and hunt down. When combat occurs the play zooms into the space combat segment well beloved of the series. You can actually play hotseat split-screen with two players on the same keyboard, a rare feature indeed!

Unfortunately not much has been allocated for WCA in the way of differentiation from the series - it looks and plays exactly like any Wing Commander game, minus the strong plot that is a hallmark of the series. As it stands, WCA is feels merely like a stab at the RTS pie, and doesn't really seem to be doing it whole-heartedly at that. This had the potential for so much more, and yet it doesn't deliver beyond the "what if Wing Commander had an RTS?" premise.

A decent execution of a good idea, but unfortunately lacking in depth and overall spirit. Still, a must-see for oldschool Wing Commander fans.
