A well polished, balanced and highly addictive portable racing game.

User Rating: 8 | Wipeout Pulse PSP
I've never considered myself a huge racing game fan, and if I ever did play any, they'd usually be the fun, crazy ones such as Burnout or Need for Speed. However, recently I just had an urge to play a portable racing game, and since I was highly disappointed by the Gran Turismo release on the PSP, I had no idea what to seek out instead. It was just by chance that I stumbled across this gem for less than £5, so I thought I wouldn't be disappointed really for such a small price.

But behold, to my surprise, Wipeout Pulse is probably the best £5 I've spent on a PSP game, and possibly the most fun racing game I've played in a while. Not only is it clearly polished to perfection, but there's plenty of modes and features to keep you entertained.

Wipeout Pulse features a very deep campaign which becomes increasingly difficult as you progress. Fortunately, the game allows you to select the difficulty of the race beforehand which will help if you're struggling, but will decrease the amount of loyalty points earned at the end of the race. Loyalty points are given to the team you finish a race/mode with; the more the points, the more skins you can unlock for your vehicle. The game offers a fair amount of modes from your standard single race to time trail to an interesting 'zone' and 'eliminator' mode. These modes can also be played via wifi with a friend, but unfortunately the game doesn't support online via infrastructure.

Perhaps that's Wipeout's biggest letdown; the feature to design your own skins for your ships is currently impossible as the game's site is shut down, and all the DLC that could once be found on PSN has strangely been removed. This doesn't ruin the gameplay, however, as there's still plenty of content to keep you entertained for hours.

Wipeout Pulse is without a doubt one of the best and most thrilling racing games on the PSP, and despite some disappointments in the online department, you're sure to have a blast here.
