Wipeout is a title long since established in my book of records when it comes to intense racing. There has already been several iterations of the game for both PS, PS2 and the PC. When i noticed that Wipeout Pure was coming for the PSP it became my number one reason for buying a PSP.

Gameplay

There are several modes that you can play in Wipeout Pure. Time Trial, Tournament, Zone, Single Race and you of course have the multiplayer. The multiplayer is however quite flawed since you can't battle online. Last time i tried i got a error message. However I've actually tried the multiplayer using ADhoc mode and it works really well. No lag detected and you have a great range on your psp. So you can play with your pal sitting on the other end of the office without any problems. Gamesharing is avalible but only with a limited number of ships and only on the first track. There are also league restrictions. Like for instance you can't play phantom or any of the higher leagues. I do recommend that you play multiplayer using one of the higher leagues. The reason is that if you are using one of the beginner classes then the speed will inevitably cause whoever is in the middle to take the most punishment and the fact that there is almost no chance to overtake for obvious speed reasons.

Graphics

Just like the previous Wipeout games this one is a lot about design. And all in all it creates a really nice overall look and feel to the game. I'm amazed over the level of detail they have managed to cram into the PSP system. From the crowds beside the track to red balloons and fighters flying through the air. The weapon and ship special F/X is really nice. The feeling i get when entering a session is that the entire game from intro to menu to ingame is very much connected. It all has the same style and graphical touch. The intro to Wipeout Pure is a nice touch. Very clean and you get a good buildup to what is to come. Anyone who has played previous iterations of this game will recognize the different team designs from Assegai to Piranha.

Sound

The sound in wipeout pure is more then just the hoovering from the ships and the blasting of weapons. There is actually a entire soundtrack that comes with the game. With various artist. Just like with Flat Out 2 the soundtrack for Wipeout really gets you in the right feeling. With a mix of electronics, vocals, d&b and more. This helps a lot with getting you into the right mood. You can also return to the menu and select which songs you want to listen to when racing. When you do this you can also listen to them like you would with any regular mp3. However! you can't listen to the songs on continuous outside of the track. This is definitely something that i would have loved. A musicplayer so you can listen to the soundtrack only. This would have been awsome.

Overall

This game is a real blast to play and i have found myself missing busstops and trainstations just because i was to focused on the game. It is very easy to just pick up and play but very hard to put down. Wipeout Pure also has a very good learning curve. Starting with a very slow learning stage and slowly advancing to the crazy levels with intense speed and damage that makes you want to cry. The game also has a very good reward system and there are a lot of unlocks. Anything from concept art to tracks and ships. This all comes together to a very nice experience that you will want to dive into and explore to it's full extent. I've played this game twice now unlocking what i think is everything(lost my first profile when i switched mem-stick). If you havn't played this game i suggest you buy it or download the demo and check it out.
