A classic of gaming
The gameplay is very simple: your warrior, armed with some king of Plasma Gun, navigates around the maze and destroys monsters that appear all over the screen. Sometime there will be bosses such as the giant fly Worluk and the Wizard of Wor himself. You can use walls to protect yourself, but be aware that just a touch is enough to turn your brave warrior into dust!
Extremely basic: you go around a maze, killing stuff. But it's also the greatest strenght of the game: easy to pick up, almost impossible to let go. When you pass to the next level (or "Dungeon"), you will see that monsters are more vicious and fast, and get smarter too. The best moments in the game come at high levels of difficulty, when monsters are a lot faster than you, and far more numerous: your gun can only fire once, and you must wait for the shot to touch something to be able to fire again - the sheer tension of those instants, waiting, almost praying, for your shot to touch something so that you can blast the monster that is coming right behind you, is something that modern gaming has not been able to reproduce. Myself, I only got to the Dungeon 42: this game gets hard really quicly, and I'm not even sure it has an end. Maybe you just go forward, through endless mazes, and your score shoots right up. But it's not frustrating - hard, but not frustrating. I still remember my personal record, 492.100 points. Maybe you can do better. Multiplayer is the best part of the game, done in cooperative, or in competition with another friend, the fun doubles. Beware not to shoot your friend, though.
Graphically, we've seen far better C64 games: everything is just lines on a black background. Sure, there are some nice flashes, but nothing great. The character design does remain into mind, though. Sound is better - The music fastens as you go deeper into the dungeons, and some effects like the monsters growling and your gun firing have become a classic, all thanks to the great SID processor.
This game is the real gem of the C64, even if it was just a launch game. If you haven't already done so, check it out - you will understand what classic gaming really means.
