Something of a Yawner

Looking back, I'm not sure why. But for some reason, I loved this game as a kid. I play this game at least once a year. But the more I play it, the less I like it. It's one of those games whose flaws become more and more clear with each playthrough.

Gameplay-While not the worst I've ever seen, Wizards & Warriors has some gameplay issues that almost sink its ship. The controls are spotty at best. Attacking things with your sword is an almost futile venture. You might as well just crash into your enemies until you obtain the aptly named Dagger of Throwing. Once you pick up the Potion of Levitation, you never know when you might randomly rise into the air, no matter which button you press. While I consider this game easy, at its core it is a very difficult game. The fact that you can continue an infinite number of times make it very easy to win. It is little things like that make the game mediocre at best.

Visuals-Once again, the visuals land squarely in the realm of mediocre. Our hero, Kuros, is merely a walking suit of armor. The levels are pretty much used twice, shaped slightly differently and colored with a different crayon. The enemies, while numerous, begin to look the same after awhile. There is nothing even remotely graphically spectacular about this game.

Sound-Here is where Wizards & Warriors takes a dive. Repetition is the name of the game. The worst offender is the warning music that plays when you are about to die. Approximately four notes played over and over and over, ad nauseum. There are very few sound effects in the game, and what is there is just so-so.

Value-There is very little. You can win this game in about an hour, throw it on the shelf and forget about it. It plays the same every time. There are no branching paths or choices to make. Grab the gems, get a few keys, kill the bad guy, cut down the tied up damsel in distress, lather, rinse and repeat. Don't get me wrong, I've played worse...much worse. But the bottom line is that Wizards & Warriors is interesting for about the first three levels. After that, it gets pretty stale.
