This wasn't a copy of an existing FPS, it was the original that started it all!

Back in the Day of Wolfestein, ID Software had just made it's jump from Apogee Software. Wanting to get out of their Commander Keen shadow, ID wanted to make a game that would be gritty, violent, appauling, but most of all, absolute fun! This is where they decided to take a classic game and give it a 3D spin. I remember my first experience with Wolf 3D, I did not like the fact that you were looking through the eyes of your character, every game that I had ever played you could see your character. As I continued to play, I found myself drwan into the game, gunning down Nazi's around every corner, I became addicted!

In Wolfenstein 3D you play as a soldier who is caputerd and put in prision by the Nazi's. You lure a guard to your cell, kill him and take his gun. Now is time to make your escape. The objectives were very simple. Run around, kill as many Nazi's as you could, collect gold, and escape. Along the way you would have to fight a boss character at the end of each of the 6 episodes. Since the game was so fresh, there weren't a big variet of weapons, 4 to be exact. You had a knife, a pistol, a machine gun, and a mini gun, all of which used the same ammo. As you would take damage, you were shown a portrate of your character at the bottom of the screen looking around, the more damage you took, the bloodier you would become, to the point you were almost unracognizable hamburger meat. To keep your health from dropping to 0, you were given a few diffrent health items on the floor that were scatterd on the floor such as health packs, turkey dinners, and even dog food... Yes, I said it... Dog food. While the graphics are extremely dated for today's standards, the sprites in the game displayed what they needed to and did what they needed to. Everything from a German soldier firing at you with a machinegun, to dogs running up and biting you, were showen. Sound was not even that bad for how old the game is. MIDI music would play as you went around hearing muted gunshots, but realistic sounding if you had a good sound card. You would ask hear the guards yell when they saw you, or scream "mein laven," as they fell dead.

Wolfestein 3D is a great blast from the past. To this day I still have this one and actually break it out. For anyone who needs schooling on what the first FPS was, where it all began, break out Wolf 3D, and show them where it all started. This was it! This is what broke way for the FPS games that we love and cherish today. Wolfensten 3D and ID Software deserves props for this one.
