Graphics:10 out of 10
Back 1992,Wolf 3D was literally the best graphics games could produced in that year. The 3D engine it used was quite revolutionary. It was the first game to gave 3D FPS graphics where everything that happens in the game feels like it's actually happening to you.It also had higher color resolution than most games in 1992 and had the best textured surface a PC game had during that time.
Sound:10 out of 10
The sounds were the closest to real life that you could hear back in 1992.Every gunshot literally sounded like a real gun being fired. The voice acting is mostly in German, and for the time, was simply the closest thing to hearing a real person speak in PC games. The musical score is quite catchy.
Gameplay:10 out of 10
Wolf 3D invented the most fundamental aspects of the FPS genre. From fast paced gameplay to numerous enemies to slaughter to various types of gun, they and every basic FPS convention start in Wolf 3D.
Wolf 3D was more arcade like.Rather than having to complete various objective, the game consist mainly of finding keys to lock door, searching for elevators to reach the next level, slaughtering tons of enemy, and at the last level of each episode, you fight a boss.Though people may think of this forumula as boring,it was the most 3D fun a person could hav had back then.
The game was also the most controversial title of 1992.It caused an uproar, since it was not only a very violent game for the time, but it had swastika's, and even had the anthem of the Nazi party, Horst-Wessel-Lied as theme music, not to mention pictures of Hitler pasted all over the walls.
Every episode had a secret level too, which was found by exploring the secret passages in the levels. One episode's secret level was even a "Pac-Man" replica, complete with ghosts that chase you around the level, and treasure to collect instead of pellets. Every level had many secret passages, leading to anything ranging from gold treasure, to med-kits, extra lives, and upgrades weapons.
Overall, it was a masterpiece for its time.
Replay Value:High
Although modern gamers may be turned off by the repititive formual of finding keys to open doors, trying to enter the next level while slaughtering numerous enemies and fighting a boss at the end of each episode, the game actually has high replay. For some reason, the moment you start playing you get hooked and addicted to the game. The game is so addicting that you may not even notice the repititive formula.Additionally you have secret amusing levels to unlock, have 4 different difficulty levels to bear, and the challenge of trying to beat each level before the time limit passes by along with killing all enemies on the level, finding all treasures on the level, and unlocking all secret rooms on each level to earn a high score.
Wolfenstein 3D is a masterpiece that will always be remembered as the game that popularized and invented the FPS Genre.Even today it manages to be very fun and addicting.Give it a try(even if you only play modern games) and you will be surprised of hooked and addicted you will get to the game and of the hundreds of hours you will spend playing this masterpiece.
I give Wolfenstein 3D a PERFECT 10 out of 10.
