Worms, the ultimate multiplayer party game of massive explosions, backstabbing tactics and everlasting replay value.
I have always been a fan of the worms series. This game being no exception. Worms 4 is a welcome addition to the worms series of games, with an expanded multiplayer collection of modes. The multiplayer aspect of gaming on worms has always been its major drawpoint, in the earlier 2D versions of the game i chose to ignore the first player missions and focus soley on its fantastic multiplayer Deathmatch modes. With Worms 4: Mayhem Team17 has given the fans exactly what they wanted a more multiplayer value.
Multiplayer modes include:
• Deathmatch - Classic Battle to the Death
• Homelands - Each worm starts in their own fortress, same deathmatch rules apply
• Destruction - Go crazy and blow the crap out of apposing teams forts. Worms respawn.
• Statue Defend - Destroy apposing teams statues.
• Survivor - One worm each. Worms respawn until no more remain.
Myself i prefer to stick to the classic deathmatch mode when a few mates are around. The other modes to spark some further interest and more possibilitys when playing with friends.
Owning the Worms 3D game as well has helped me compare and judge Worms 4 single player value. Worms 4 comes equiped with with two soley single player modes. That of 'Story' and 'Challenges'. The story mode takes a stab at linking all of the missions together with a story arc of a time travelling Professor Wormwinkle and you, his team of student worms. Worms 4 has 25 story mode missions plus a few tutorial missions to have you get a grasp on worms' unique controls and gameplay.
Challenges pitch yourself against Team17 best times on various themed challenges that worms fans have seen for a while. Including Shotgun Challenge, Sniper Rifle, Jetpack and Super Sheep. Your aim is too complete the given challenge in the desired time to be rewarded with maximum coins. There are also 10 Deathmatch challenges, similar in progression style to the story mode. With really no story but the goal of achieving a beating a more difficult team of worms every deathmatch.
Worms 4 is trying to greatly improve on its previous versions with a new system of a reward based unlocking system where you purchase new gear from the items shop. Unlockable Items include Sound Banks, Maps, Heads, Eyes, Hands, Face, Weapons and Characters. With each single player mission you complete you gain 20 coins, and a further 20 if you complete it in the given time. Same ideas apply to the challenges. The whole idea of the rewards system is to keep you playing for hours on end, and let me tell you it achieves exactly that. With a few easter eggs to find and a vastly difficulty cabinet of trophys to fill for reaching a certain point or achieving a difficult task, such as killing 4 worms with one turn.
Some attracted but somewhat disappointing customisable weapons system was introduced along with already seen customisable Worm Teams and game styles. The one let down of this weapons system is the fact that you can only edit the team weapon, so you can only carry one weapon of your creations wth you when you go into battle. Another disapointment with this new Worms addition is its down graded landscape generator, with Mayhem you are stuck with random levels or Pre built landscapes. Worms 3D saw us able to control the randomised scenarios with heights of levels, widths, land mass and alot more. Worm teams have improve with now you are able to customise the appearance of your team and unlock more goodies for making a snazzy team of killers.
But overall this game offers many hours of gameplay and it manages to rope you in with its rewards system. Buying this game you will still want to play previous versions of the series as each different game can offer something different.
