Such a waste ...
There are four demigod-overlords, each seeking absolute power through the throne of Gaia. Each demigod represents an alignment first found in the D&D system. The Lawful Good Aena, the Chaotic Good Epothos, the Lawful Evil Durlock and the Chaotic Evil Helamis. The two demigoddesses are obviously in need of clothing (my mother entered the room during an interactive showing the two gals and thought I was watching some sort of porn flick), but the male demigods are in better shape. Each commands an army of monsters, which they use on a battleground in order to achieve complete victory.
There is some story in Wrath, but the story is basically the lust interests of Durlock and Helamis. Each craves his half-opposite, and are prone to remind us that in every mission briefing. So basically all this bloodshed is caused by the demigods' sexual appetite. It's quite pathetic, really.
The strategy part of Wrath is fairly simple, but fun. Various terrain hinders or benefits your units (which are classed as light, medium and heavy), and there are key structures which will play a vital role in the battle. The battle itself is pure street fighting action, with combos and special abilities to keep things interesting.
The army units themselves are interesting, but very few are "unique". Both Epothos and Aena have a Dragon unit, which is 90% identical to the other. Special abilities are different though.
Graphics: Wrath Unleashed was the first game I played on my newly-bought HDTV, and I nearly cried, for it looked horrible, just horrible. The resolution was terrible, the aliasing could stun a horse, and the screen's blur could make Columbus lose sight of America for ever. On a CRT television however, things are quite improved. Not jolly good, but improved.
Music: Hollywood-like epic music, but lacks substance. The sound effects are nothing special, but they're not bad either.
Gameplay: The strategy part is fine, but the fighting system could use some work. And I'm not talking about a small-time job, like fixing a door. I'm talking about like, bringing down the whole damn building and start up again. The sprite collision is questionable, the CPU becomes annoying after the first 9 missions in the story mode, and the manual lacks any sort of playing tips, or learning curves. You're on your own, and from Durlock's story mode the game is no pic-nic.
Final Verdict: Wrath Unleashed has good points, like it's strategy part, creature design and atmosphere, but is crippled by it's ludicrously difficult A.I. (after a few missions), it's horrendous fighting gameplay, and it's cheesy story mode. Two-player mode is much better though, and if you have a buddy or sibling you are bound to have some fun with Wrath Unleashed.
