Not the best WWE game you'll play...

User Rating: 5.2 | WWE Survivor Series GBA
2004 was a bit of a hit and miss for Wrestling Games. Smackdown Vs Raw (for the PS2) was a great game, but had a few features that were a bit lacking. Day of Reckoning (for the GC) was a great game, with features to make PS2 Wrestling fans want to get a Gamecube. As the year was closing off, THQ decided to make one more Wrestling game, this time for the GBA. The result was Survivor Series. The game uses the same engine as the previous WWE GBA game, Road to Wrestlemania X8, which can be a good or bad thing. There are some improvements, one of which being that you can press the select button to perform a superstar’s finisher (provided you know the situation). The engine isn't as good as the WWE games on the market, but thats a given, because the other games have more buttons than on the GBA. Also, the game features 18 Superstars (9 from Smackdown and Raw), and all are the most popular superstars on their respective shows. The engine features a grappling similar to that of the older Smackdown games, where press the grapple button and then press a combination of a direction and grapple or the punch button in order to pull off a move. The game includes a bunch of Match Types, including Tag, Triple Threat, Royal Rumble (which isn't as good as in other games), Lumberjack, Cage and more. The game includes a story mode, but it's really not worth covering, because put simply, it isn't really that good. All you do is win three titles, and after doing so, you go on to the other show and win the titles. Losing a match earns you a game over, something which doesn't happen in any wrestling game. The game has some problems. Firstly, the AI is pretty bad. This is shown in Tag Matches, for when you tag your partner in, the opponent immediately goes to work on him, and you'll get lucky if your partner decides to fight back. Also, the Pin and Submissions are off, and this is especially in Tag matches, because the you can give your special many times to one opponent, but they tag, they lose the damage you gave them, making tag matches run for unwanted lengths of time. Another complaint is the speed of the system; it takes a second for you to attack or grapple, which slows the game down. Graphically, the game isn't really good at all. Firstly, even though there are different arenas to pick, the audiences are the same for all the shows, so don't be surprised if you see a RVD sign on RAW. Also, the superstars are even worse. While they are distinguishable, they are all the same height, which is really unrealistic. In real life, there are only a few wrestlers that are the same height, in this game, they are all the same. Also, the game actually does include entrances, but it’s nothing special, all they do is walk out to their music, but that’s understandable, given the capabilities of the GBA compared to the Xbox and PS2. The game at least sounds a little better than it looks. There are a few tunes in the game, but they are average at least. The RAW and Smackdown themes aren’t in the game, but the superstars music is in the game. The tunes aren’t the best quality, but if you watch the WWE, you’ll recognize them. So, to add it all up, the game has its good moments, and you’ll be interested in this game for some time. Sadly, there are no unlockables, which seriously takes some points off longevity. And while the game doesn’t look good or sound great, it will keep you occupied till the next big console WWE game.
