Poor graphics, frustrating controls and a high degree of difficulty keep this game from reaching its full potential.

User Rating: 5 | WWII Aces WII
WWII Aces is an air combat game for the Wii. It takes place during World War II and you get to pilot historical aircraft from Great Britain, Germany, and the Soviet Union. On the surface this seems like a fun game. Unfortunately, this game suffers from multiple setbacks, including less than stellar controls, frustrating difficulty, and poor graphics. These setbacks can ruin this game for some people.

Graphics: Simply put, the graphics in this game are ugly. I have played Nintendo 64 games with better graphics. For a fifth generation game, this presentation is far below par. However, if you don't care so much about graphics, the game play will not be hampered very much. 3/10

Controls: There are three different control configurations in WWII Aces. The first configuration is holding the Wii Remote on its side. This method is rather frustrating, because in order to turn, you must tilt the Wii Remote in the proper direction. However, if you do this too quickly, you will barrel roll instead. Conversely, if you're trying to barrel roll, the controls may not respond and you will turn instead. The buttons are difficult to use in this configuration. The second and third configurations use the Wii Remote with the Nunchuck. I found these methods more responsive and easier to control than the first method, but even these methods feel a little awkward at times. 3/10

Game play: There are over 70 missions to play in this game, but you must beat them in successive order to unlock the ones after them. The fact that most of the missions are very difficult even on the easiest setting doesn't help. There are three campaigns, one for each faction, and they are about the same in level of difficulty. In addition, there is a dogfight mode, where two players can either challenge each other or work together to defeat a host of enemies. There are a few different options in this mode, so if you can convince one of your buddies to play with you, you'll be kept busy for a while. 5/10

Sound: The sound effects are good. There's nothing like the crash of a bomb into an enemy vehicle or ship to make you feel satisfied. The music is also decent, with a different theme played for each of the factions. There are snippets of voice acting, which can be fun to listen to depending on your taste. 6/10

In conclusion, if you have your heart set on getting a WWII air combat game for the Wii and are willing to tolerate the lackluster graphics, frustrating controls, and high level of difficulty, I suggest you rent this game.
