In the original game, gamers could create mix and match a team of four random X-Men to send into battle against the notorious Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the master of magnetism himself, Magneto. Despite their violent disputes with each other in the past, the two groups must now do something unimaginable in order to save their world from the threat of the tyrannical mutant Apocalypse and his Horsemen.
They must learn to fight together.
“X-Men Legends II” takes the redeeming qualities of the original game and exponentially builds upon them until the game overflows with depth and strategy. Instead of being able to choose from only the X-Men, gamers can now choose from over 16 different mutants like Cyclops and Wolverine from the X-Men or slightly more malevolent mutants like Juggernaut and Toad from the Brotherhood.
Each mutant has his or her own set of superpowers that they can develop over time from destroying enemies and leveling up. As mutants become higher in level, their powers will dramatically increase allowing them to unleash powerful attack combos with other teammates. This makes mixing and matching the mutants to see which powers compliment others the best quite strategic and entertaining.
On top of being able to create a team, gamers are also able to collect items that can be worn by team members for specials boosts in their stats. These clothing items can help buff up certain characters depending on the stats of the item, and some rare pieces can be worn with other rare pieces to create a full set of impressive boosts in power, intelligence, stamina, and other categories.
Gamers looking to spend a little quality time with their friends should also seek out this game. “X-Men Legends II” possess an awesome 4-player mode both offline and online with X-Box Live’s online subscription. Being able to take control of one of the 4 team members with 3 other friends really brings out the fun in this game.
Even though “Legends II” is such a solid game, it is not without its faults. One critical mistake is the size of the text in the game. If gamers are finding themselves squinting or sitting 4 feet away from their TV sets, then something isn’t right.
However the biggest problem the game faces is the way item organization and exchanging operates. Usually in RPG type games, stats of items are easily detailed for the gamer so that it is easier to know what item is better or worse than what they’re wearing. In “Legends II” it’s quite difficult to understand which item is the best for a character.
It’s not really a problem, but another nitpick with the game is the lack of alterations in character models when putting on new items. In most RPG type games, characters will appear physically different when gamers switch clothing articles, however the characters in “Legends II” will always look the same throughout the game.
These minor problems shouldn’t discourage gamers from picking up this amazing superhero game. “X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse is full of action and strategy that can not only be shared with friends, but can even stand alone as a great single-player experience.
