The game offers players a great role playing experience, yet has problems that players cannot ignore.
The game offers players a fairly well developed system reminiscent of some so many Action/RPGs. The story and dialogue helps bring new players to the franchise and gives fans more of what they have come to expect from the fictional team of superheros. Gameplay is fairly solid and the four player cooperative play add hours to the replayability of X-Men Legends. On top of the story mode, there are two addition modes of play which offer both solo play multiplayer action. Much of the graphics are done through cell shading, so depending on how you feel about this style of animation, you will either hate or love character designs. Sound is definitely the strongest part of this title, allowing players to listen to a wide array of sound effects and well done stage music. With that said, let's discuss what is lacking in this title. Many players will find this disappointing.
While the cast of characters is fairly large, players will find themselves sticking with a group of 5 or 6 throughout the entire game. This is especially sad since there are another 8 or 9 characters that are not enjoyable to play with. Fan favourites like Jubilee and Rogue are lacking when compared to Storm and Colossus. Collision detection is also lacking in this title as players will find much needed items slipping through walls or team members falling through cracks in the floor. You would wonder whether or not the game testers were doing their jobs after a few hours of this. While the opening cinema was very well constructed, many of the following cinematics seems rough and incomplete. Finally, for Xbox owners of the game, key items like Comic books are missing from the title. It is upsetting for players who are trying to unlock everything to find that their hands are tied in some places. Other large glitches are also hard to miss. In a heated fight, some characters simply lose their mutant powers and are left executing attacks that are simply an animation. This may turn players off from playing through again after beating the game.
In conclusion, X-men Legends does have its strengths, but also very visible weaknesses. My recommendation is that players wait for this title to drop in price before purchasing, but if one cannot wait till then, be careful of how much you pay for the title and which system you buy it for. Even with all its flaws, X-Men Legends is an enjoyable RPG for both fans of the comic and those new to the franchise.
