A great title that could have been a great game if it wasn't used only for the movie publicity.
"X-men 3: The Official Game" was a total letdown, I mean it could have been a good game. But too many repititive missions, bad cinematics, and poor replay value made this game just worth renting.
Allowing you to play Wolverine, Iceman, and Nightcrawler (which by the way wasn't even in the movie) sounded good at first but as you play through the game you'll see the excitement disperse away. Like in the past X-men movie where you play Wolverine, you'll find yourself just charging into enemy fire again, constantly draining your health and'll be like-wise just healing them back. And without any combo upgrades you'll just be doing the same set of moves over and over again.
Playing Iceman was a bit original in the game, surfing on ice and firing beams and spikes was kind of cool. The only bad thing about it was the goofy controls which makes it hard to fire while keeping up your speed. I mean your trying to hold the X button for speed while trying to press the O button to fire. Other than that, the Iceman segments go smoothly. Did I mention the fact that Iceman and Nightcrawler has healing powers in the game which their not suppose to be able to do.
Nightcrawler segments in the game is alright though. The teleporting command gives you an edge over your enemies by means of speed and evasion. Other than the out of place healing power, Shadow Aura, which Nightcrawler sort of goes invisible (but can still be seen by enemies). This was the most tolerable part in the game.
Let's get it straight, the story of the game isn't related what so ever to the current movie, and it's presented in a lame 2-D comicbook cinematics. Except for the part the opening where they show Scott sobbing in front of Alkali Lake, the rest of the movie is about Stryker's Sentinels trying to destroy all mutants and it's Master Mold being activated mysteriously. With more connections and encounters seen X-men 2, the story was original and starred the real casts of the movie, but it was presented in a lame 2-D comicbook style which made it unenjoyable to watch.
In the end it would have been a good game if not for too many downsides. In my opinion I think this game was just a chance to increase the publicity for the upcoming movie.
