The best japanese rpg ive ever played
The story can be very confusing and even daunting at first, many things may not make sense to you on your first play through which is why i would reccomend more than one. You start off the game as fei fong wong who has no memory of his past and just wants to live a peaceful life inside of his village. Though devastating events that will occur wont allow fei to do so as he is very important to the world of xenogears and is forced to embark on his journey.
The graphics arnt anything special even for its time but xenogears manages to make up for that in other areas such as story telling and a very deep combat system. Combats can be fought either on ground or on your gear (high mech robots), it consists of combining multiple action sequences together by pressing triangle, square and x. Each button ranges from light to heavy and if mixed correctly you can perform special moves that can cause even greater damage to your enemies. The combat in gears works the same way though it can be a bit more difficult as you have to worry about your HP and your fuel running out. Feul can be replenished though by activating your boosters.
During your journey you will run into many characters that will aid fei on his journey though not all characters are who they appear to be. Xenogears is very heavy on story and is the best story ever told in an rpg. It centers around pain, loss, tradegy, love, racism, slavery, religion and many other gripping events. Ive played many rpgs on the psone and xenogears is easily among the best it has to offer. Its story is still among the best ive ever experienced even still as of today 12 years later.
Xenogears is a game i would highly reccomend to anyone who's never gotten a chance to experience this masterpiece. Its combat and story is top of the line and almost defines what and how japanese rpgs should be like. Its a game ive enjoyed as a child and still enjoy till this day. Xenogears is easily the best japanese role playing to have ever been created.
